I went back to Pepboys for the Royal Purple 5 qt. and RP filter special ($35 off) and they were out of RP filters in my size. The Mobil 1 filter is a dollar less but looks exactly the same....is it?
I think the guy will substitute it if I ask..

While we're at it, let's broaden the question to Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1 vs. K&N. They're all made by Champion Labs and about the same cost. Are they the same thing, or is the media different?

I do not think they are the same. IIRC, The RP is a fully synthetic media. The Mobil 1 is only a semi synthetic media.

the RP also seems to have a thicker case (more sturdy). try going on youtube and watching some videos where they cut both open, then you can see which one you prefer.

pepboys will also order you a RP filter in from another store that has one, usually takes half a day or so.

Yes, the RP is a wire backed synthetic media. M1 and K&N are a cellulose/synthetic blend. Other than that I think the construction is pretty similar.

you shouldve bargined with manager to give you their best filters for same price if u bought "something else" or told them to check other pep boys and put it on hold for ya

Same factory, same construction for some of the filters. Not exactly the same media.

That filter can also be ran two consecutive OCI,im currently on my second 6k run with a NAPA Premium syn filter(basically the same filter).

Royal Purple claims 12K miles while Mobil 1 claims 15K miles. So, based on claims, both can be run for extended intervals.

I ran MC FL400S, P1 and even OCOD 2 consecutive OCI's of 6-7k miles(with dino oi) for more than 250k miles in my LS400. When that car had synthetic I double the mileage to 12-13k miles.

Neither RP or M1 filters are made by FRAM.

Just have them order the RP filter for you. I just picked up the alllowed for 2 deals on Tuesday but they only had one filter. I prepaid for the 10qts and 2 filters and they ordered in the 2nd filter for me. It was there yesterday.

At least here near me PepBoys is actually a pretty good company to deal with. The guys at the store I use go out of their way to make customers happy. Last time they had a deal like this they were short on oil. They ordered in 10qts for me and again let me prepay so I didn't miss the deadline. They had the oil in 2 days.

Also, no the RP and M1 filters are not 100% the same. Different media for one thing.

I don't see in pbm's post where he said it was. Was this just another opportunity to troll? Lets see... Looking at KevGuy's most recent posts...

Posts Gratuitously promoting Fram 53
Posts defending against people being unhappy about the constant Fram advertisments.. 6
Posts that actually contribute something to discussion 12
Posts of general conversation 18
Posts slamming filters other than Fram 6

And mixed with all this, Absurd statements about how Fram is better than Wix, Napa Gold and Mobil 1. And the most humerous of all, the post that says "I am not pro Fram", with a sig line that says "Do not fear the orange can."

Like I said a month ago ... "mouthpiece".

Meh....just somebody who thinks they can win the next free "Tour the Fram Factory Sweepstakes", and thinks the Fram CEO is his best bud. It's not worth it to reply to his posts anymore because there is no objectivity to them. Move along folks, nothing to see.

I think that is the main point. It's OK to believe in and be passionate about something and even to tell everybody about it. But there has to be some substance behind it, not just a mindless parroting of a series of goofy tag lines. That gets old real quick.
