Are Purolator Classic's...

We wanted a longer filter for more surface area. The glue line was spotty on this filter. We did have 8 oz of Seafoam in the sump. The car has 17 Psig at idle and 70 psig at 3000 rpm. I do not know if the bypass pressure was the issue or not. The QC on these basic filters is suspect imho. We have upgraded and will cutopen the next one. Stay tuned

I kind of wonder about the classics also. I've always used wix filters but after seeing how cheap Wally world had em figured I'd try 1. The metal isn't as thick was the first thing I noticed and the next morning/ cold start I had a lot more start up noise than with the wix, since then changed it out quick with chevron / Havoline and a wix filter.

That glued seam failure was probably a fluke due to a bad glue job. Not sure if Seafoam would have any effect on the glue or not. The filter's bypass valve pressure setting has nothing to do with the oil pressure your engine makes. Sounds like the bypass pressure on the failed filter is set higher than most, which means Purolator thinks the media can take a big PSI differential ... so doubt a high PSI delta caused the seam to fail.

This was disconcerting at best. While the end caps are metal the filter media is like a thin, inexpensive cardboard. How many users actually cut open their filters? We had to start this due to the de-sludging process on the Lexus.
Was it a fluke? I hope so but we have seen enough. There is a classic on the car now and we will see new pics in about 500 miles.

You could try a L14670 which is bigger and will hold half a qt. And is shorter but also wider so might not work.

I don't know about you guys, but I would try a made in USA or made in Korea Fram any day, over a purolator classic. The made in China Frams look really spotty.

Frams are no good, Champ Lab's E-cores, some say WIX, and now Purolators are no good. What's left, OE

With this Purolator failure, I wouldn't be surprised if Seafoam might be to blame, or maybe it was just a fluke. I doubt the next filter you cut open will show failure. I haven't seen a Purolator come apart at the media seam before, but I do sort of question the filter media integrity where the media is bonded to the end caps.

Nope, they call Nissan OE filters a glorified Fram, so I guess I have to get washable oil filters now.

Actually, right now, Hastings has about the best price for me, even beating Frams with my corporate discount.

Hastings/Baldwin are some of the best filters on the market...I think they are right up there with OEM, and perhaps even better than OEM construction for some applications. Not all OEM filters are well made fitlers. There are some OEM filters that are truly junk... and in those cases, you can do much, much better by going with a quality aftermarket filter like an M1 EP, or Baldwin/Hastings, or even a nice quality Wix/Napa Gold.
To me as far as quality in the aftermarket Baldwin/Hastings and Wix are right there at the very top, vying for the number 1 spot.

Who else in Regina sells Hastings other than Peavy Mart?

Yep. I tend to prefer OEM, but that's assuming that it's not a dumbed down/cheapened down OEM filter, like an E-Core or a Fram type design. I'm not criticizing those designs in particular, but dealers tend to charge premium prices for their oil filters, at least up here. At least when I buy a Motorcraft, I know I'm not getting junk. Same used to be the case years back when AC Delco was available at our Walmarts.

If Nissan/Infiniti had sourced Purolator or Denso or Wix to make their filters, using standard Purolator, Denso, or Wix manufacturing processes, I wouldn't grumble too much about paying the OEM premium price. Frams are terribly overpriced here. I don't need to go to Nissan/Infiniti and pay a premium on an already overpriced filter. I can get the Hastings in the $7 neighborhood. The only thing that beats that for my G is the Bosch Premium at under $5, but that's only online, not locally.

As far as I know, that's about it. I do know the Baldwins can be obtained from Acklands Grainger, though their pricing is a little off the wall. The oversized filter for my G is competitively priced. The proper one is through the roof. Hastings at Peavey Mart is the reverse of that.

I think Great Canadian Oil Change uses Baldwins. Perhaps if you were nice they might sell just the filter to you.

For pricing, though, at least on Hastings, stick with Peavey Mart. Online, where I've found them, they're about double the price of Peavey Mart.

@sir1900

And where in Saskatchewan are you finding P1 and Classic filters? The one place I know of that used to sell actual Purolators switched to Wix some time back.

The only Purolator I have in my garage is a Motorcraft FL1A.

I drive to the US at least twice per year for holidays. Virtually all the oil and filters I have in my stash were purchased down there (except for 2 cases of TGMO). The PCs are $3.20 and up, P1s are $6 and up.

I think you can get baldwins here at pretty good price:

https://truckhelp.com/shop/category/baldwin-oil-filters/

they used to have free shipping on anything, but I think it's changed to all orders under $50 bucks now. they have really good customer service..I just ordered some baldwin air filters for my landcruiser and mbz from them, and got free shipping even though it was a few dollars under $50 bucks.
tell them you heard about them through BIOTG, and they will give you the VIP customer treatment.

He he, less than half the price of Acklands up here. I should check into what shipping would cost.
