I'v heard that SAE 0W- oils are NOT suitable for turbo-charged tuned engine, because 0W- oils are readily lost their oil pressure and viscosity under extreme hot condition in turbo. But, I can't believe cuz I think some good oils loke M1 0W-40 are strong enough in extreme condition in turbo.

Is there any clear evidence of above description (not suitability of 0W in turbo)? and, I wanna know the relationship between SAE grade and special typed engine like turbo-charged.

Please help me.

i dont see a connection between that specific number and suitability for turbo. thats a 'cold pumping' pseudonym only. it does mean better flow throughout the engine earlier on in the warmup process which is good... and whats good for the goose is good for the gander

Whoever told him that is probably thinking that 0W-30/40 oils are more prone to shearing under the duress of a turbocharger. Shearing is not always bad as long as the oil continues to protect the engine.

Typically, fluids in a sealed container gain pressure when their temperature rises rather than lose it. I would imagine that the viscosity would go up or down, depending on whether the viscosity modifiers begin to fail. It is probable that they would fail at extreme temperatures, which means that the viscosity will increase.

Oh, I've heard this over and over and over. Usually it's not the heat that is mentioned when people bring this up. They usually say "I heard 0W is just too thin at startup and will damage the turbo bearings!"

I'd just tell them not to worry...it thickens up to a 40 weight in no time flat.

The manufacturer's recommended oil in our SAAB 9-5 2.3T wagon is Mobil 1 0-W-40. This is the third turbocharged SAAB I've used the specified oil in, and have no reason to question its performance.

Mobil1 0W-40 has done well in aftermarket TT VQ35 engines in 350Z's. Even with built blocks, it has held up well despite the extra fule dilution from blowby seen in built engines with Al pistons. The Fe is always a bit high, but Al, Lead, and Chromium are no higher with this oil in a TT engine than in a stock VQ.

I'm going to run Amsoil 0W-20 in our (wife's) '05 PT Crsr 'vert, 2.4L Turbo on the next OCI.

Since we don't run the engine hard, the thin oil will be OK in it. If not, so what...lol

Some cheap 0w-xx oils might be poor choices. But you don't really want cheap oil with a turbo anyway, no matter what weight it is. With any good oil (Amsoil, Motul, Elf, Fuchs, GC, etc.), a 0w rating will be fine.

I trust the mfg engineers for the engines in question a little bit more than just about anyone else when it comes to what viscosity oil to use. If the mfg says a 0W is ok when it wasn't originally specified, then I would be willing to use it.
