Apple Mail problems

In my Apple mail app I've always had my folders on the left. Inbox, junk, trash, sent etc. Somehow these have disappeared and in their place is several categories at the top. Primary, Promotions, updates and transactions. It makes it very hard to find new emails. Also when I delete emails they show up again within a minute. I can't delete anything. today one showed up from 2021. There was a recent update that was mainly security in MacOs.
I have looked on YT and most of the fixes say to uncheck the email account and then check it again. It does nothing. I have also turned off mail backup in my iCloud.
Anybody else suffered this?

did you log into the webmail of your email account to see if there's any problems that reflect what's in your app

I shut it off every night. I am using gmail. I do leave my computer in sleep mode.

Well it seems there is a "show categories" setting in the mail app that somehow got turned on. Also there were some settings in Google mail that I needed to undo. Don't know how this stuff gets changed. I don't mess with settings.

Well everything is in order except when I delete an email it comes right back to my inbox.
