I've had off-and-on heartburn issues, usually at night, for a while, and have been taking antacid tablets and even the acid reducer. Not the expensive ($25) purple pills, but the little ones you find at Walmart. And I've cut caffeinated coffee down to less than one cup a day. Still I had some occasional problems.

So the other day I read about apple cider vinegar and honey as natural cures for heartburn. Friday I picked up some vinegar, Fleischmann's brand, and some honey at Whole Foods.

It works! A teaspoon of the raw vinegar is vicious, so I mix it about 7-to-1 with water once a day. It's like two mouthfuls of sour wine. But lo and behold, I haven't needed an antacid since Friday morning! Any of you ever try it?

I drink the stuff with the mother and honey sometimes. I do this just for health. I have heard about it for what you mention.

I am trying some mother vinegar and putting it in a bowl with oatmeal for 8 hours or overnight. A friend said it helps the oatmeal get absorbed better by your body.

I don't drink caffeine as a rule, if I do it's a small half cup.

I will give it a try when I feel yucky.

Lemon juice works too. Within 30 minutes of pressing it is a very alkalizing fruit. I think watermellon is too...

Good find!

I think the approach to heartburn is upside-down in the modern medicine. The cause is not "too much acid" but "not enough acid". The antacids, etc. try to reduce the acid even further. Vinegar increases the acid just enough for the body to react normally to the acid in the stomach.

The medical approach, to me, is a marketing ploy to make more money for the drug makers..

This is exactly what I was going to say. There is a sfincter muscle that closes the stomach. This muscle reacts when the stomach acid reaches it and prevents it going further. If the acidity is low the muscle won't react and the acid will go to the sensible parts and you start suffering. Find a diet for people with low acidity and see which products to eat and to avoid. It can be genetically low acidity or just because of what you eat .

Well might be but the main reason must be what you eat.

It sounds like a much better idea than antacid pills. I used to drink milk with each meal to keep HB back.

Blood type O people like me tend to have excess acid output. I think the ER4YT people take Bladderwrack for it. You might look into alkalizing your body more by eating more fruit and vegetables, which most are alkaline forming - except cranberry, plum, pomegranate, blueberry, tomato, and rhubarb.

Yes, that's generally true. Many people have gotten rid of heartburn by taking HCl [hydrochloric acid, also known as Betaine HCl] with meals.

I've had 2 Heidelburg Gastric Analysis tests done and was found to have hypochlorhydria [very low stomach acid output] both times.

We used to be able to buy a cider vinegar and honey drink called Honeygar.Made by an Eastern European woman who used to promote fermented foods...sauerkraut etc.Cider vinegar is the only vinegar we use in our house,I use it for dressings and cooking.

I drink Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar (about 2 oz. mixed with 8 oz. of water) once or twice a day, and it has taken care of my nighttime heartburn. Bragg's is the only one we have here locally that has the mother. Apple Cider vinegar taken regularly is great for skin, fingernails, teeth, weight loss, upset stomach, cholesterol reduction, and a host of other things. All I know is as crummy as it tastes, I sure feel better when I am drinking it regularly.

Apple cider vinegar will save you when you have a bout of food poisoning.

I was violently ill from eating a bad burger at fudruckers. Nothing worked at all. I took a couple shots of apple cider vinegar with water, and that solved my woes within an hour.

remember you can get cider vinegar in capsules if you don't enjoy drinking it!

And I never heard of a "sfincter" muscle before!

I love this place.

"sphincter" is the correct spelling. It's supposed to keep the contents of your stomach in the stomach. Sometimes it doesn't, and stomach contents go into the esophagus. This gets irritated, and causes heartburn. Or aspirating food into the lungs if you're an older person...

My grandma used to drink an apple cider vinegar and honey concoction daily. I don't know why she used to do this. I chalked it up to some old Japanese home-remedy of sorts.

This explains why we used to have a bunch of empty "Heinz" vinegar and "Sue-Bee" honey bottles and jars around the house.

She also used to make this fermented persimmon mash called "she-boo". You put this stuff on cuts, scrapes and burns.

Same here. Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar w/ the Mother(the sediment)undistilled/cloudy. I use it in my EVOO/red wine/Balsamic/Bragg's and Lemon Juice salad dressing. Lot's of EVOO.
Also, 1 tbspn w/ 8oz water is great for alot of things. Doesn't really work for my heartburn unless I watch every single thing that I eat/drink. I would love to get off of the NEXIUM but the NEXium is the only thing that really works.
