anyone use this oil back in the day? (1992)

Would love to see a VOA of that.

I saw an early QS bottle (1980's) like that in the back of a car in a classic car junkyard I went to a few months ago (pics posted in that section).

I used the Super Blend quite a bit in my '68 Beetle, '74 Pinto, and '75 VW Sciroco...and ocassionally the Deluxe. They were in cans back then though. When I moved to Colorado in 1978 I had to start using Mobil 1 for cold start-up (no block heater). The M1 worked great, but leaked like a sieve in my Sciroco! I had to buy a new car.

I used it many times, but "back in the day?" When I started doing oil changes the stuff still came in cans and I had to jam a metal spout into each can to dispense the stuff. I know there must be a bunch of you out there that remember metal sided (and then, cardboard sided) cans.

OLD? Pffft I used this last yr.

My dad always bought the oil and filters when I was a teen. He started buying DeLuxe instead of Super Blend because we moved to Texas at which point he decided we needed "heavier" oil to cope with the summer heat. He used to stock us up on Super Blend for the "winter" (in quotes because winter is very short here) and DeLuxe for the rest of the year. The Catalina never needed to have oil added during its 3,000 mile OCI until I sold it at 212,000 miles. We are talking about the 80's, after all. I was pretty quick to embrace extended OCI's, though. A good friend grew up with a dad who traveled a lot in his car and started using Mobil 1 in the 70's.

I finally broke down and bought one of those super heavy duty, yellow rubber coated spouts since the cheaper ones kept bending if you got a slightly thicker can top... I was so proud of it...

Neighbors actually borrowed it.

At many gas/service stations, oil cans were used.
Topping oil up on cars that came in for gas was very common.
There were racks that held a bunch of cans upside down to drain them into a container [got that last little bit out].
This was collected and used by owners for the wrecker or whatever.

Yeah, we had a really spout, too. It was all about technique. You had to place the spout just right and jam it straight down with minimal lateral motion. That was especially important with the cardboard sided cans. You could have a real mess on your hands. Personally, I much prefer the 5qt jugs combined with a funnel.

I don't miss using cans of oil. I've always been picky about a clean funnel, and the ones designed for cans tended to attract dust for obvious reasons. I still have such a funnel hanging in my garage.

As for the original picture, I've used many of those bottles, and older varieties, numbering likely in the thousands.
