Is it possible to burn your own apartment down with burning down apartments of others? He was an actor , no?

I must've missed the apartment burning story due to the Bicentennial celebration. 42 years ago...time zap...

The Jack Cassidy I remember married to Shirley Jones, Partridge family. Didn't know about dying in apartment burn down so read on Wikipedia. Mental health issues and alcoholism. Apparently incident couple years prior to death, neighbors reported him watering his front yard naked in the middle of the afternoon.
