Anyone own an '05-07 Tacoma?

Comparing an s10 to a Tacoma is crazy. You wont find many fords or chevs running around the deserts of Africa. The toyotas in Africa dont rust and just keep running and running.

My dad had a toyota corona in the early 80's in Africa. That thing was built like a tank! In the 80's there were no ashpalt roads there, all dirt roads with potholes and there is no such thing there as preventative maintenance. Oil changes? what oil changes. Radiator was filled with tap water and tap water is not filtered water there. That corona just kept on going and going. Left Africa in 1988 and that car had over 300k km's on it and never gave us problems.

Get it through your thick head, the guy isnt gonna buy a S10 no matter how much you plug them...

And more importantly, if domestic cars are so great now days, why does every year foreign (most specifically toyota) grow in market share, while domestics (most significantly GM) decline. Are you saying that americans are so dumb they are buying rubbish vehicles made in another country when our own country makes the best that can be bought?

Something tells me its the other way around, americans after years of buying rubbish cars made in this country are finally fed up, and are buying cars that are the best long term solution for their money, regardless of where they're made.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler will continue to lose money until they can put out a quality vehicle, at a reasonable price, thats more reliable than their foreign competition, and they do this long enough to regain consumer trust.

The fact that one S10 has been great to you, unfortunately, will not save the american auto makers, nor should it.

Back to the original poster, Get the Tacoma, get the V6 if gas isnt a huge concern, get the 6 speed, and any options you want, the only thing id really have to think about is the 4x4, only because of where you live, how badly do you need/ want it? In 10 years you'll look out one day on what will still be a wonderful midsize truck, and you'll be happy with your choice.

I recommended the '06 Tacoma to a friend of mine back when he was looking for a new truck and he hasn't had a single problem with it yet, and he doesn't know the first thing about cars or maintenance for that matter. He's had it for almost 2 years now, too. Apparently he's happy with it.

Thick head? my my , why so hostile isn't that against the guidelines?
I like Tacomas too, but i am another who looked back and can say in the 12 years i've owned the S10 is a great truck.
If you want to blow 25 or 30 grand on a mid size truck based on superstition, do it.

One think i like about the 05+ 4.0L's is the oil filter location. Since the 05's came out some reported rearend problems others engine mounts and now theres a TSB on the rear leaf springs.

The problmes im sure is caused by hard offroad use. Street qweens no much of problmes. I own an 02 with the 3.4L and love driving it. Under powered for sure but who cares.

I own an 07 Tacoma TRD Sport 4.0 v6 with the 4 doors, towing package and steps. On the negative side, I have been averaging 17.5 MPG driving around town, and about 19.5 on the highway. It runs rough until the motor warms up, and I am talking when it is only 50 degrees outside. The valves tap, the motor has a "surge" when stopped at a light, and to top it all off, my wife's 05 Honda Pilot pulls my boat easier then the Tacoma does. On a positive note, the truck rides VERY smooth on the road, handles bumps well and looks like a million bucks. I have had no problems with the truck mechanically.

But when its running 20 years from now (without spending 20x its value on parts). It's company isn't on the brink of going out of business (in fact quite the opposite) and holds its resale value (for those of you who might want something more recent in 20 years)

Then, Joe will know why he bought the toyota... It might not be the smoothest running truck on the market...but unlike the silverado, at least its running...

I would return it to the shop and complain then call toyota customer service.

Siverados aren't running?

Hey where do you see all the cheap used silverados the ones i see are pretty expensive.

I ended up with an '03 Tahoe LT in excellent condition.

I would never own an S-10. It does not meet my needs.

A beat up S-10 sounds like it meets the needs of FXJohn though.

I am still considering a Tacoma though. I can still sell the Tahoe for what I paid for it, since I got an excellent deal on it.

the new style of tacos are deff not the same as the 3rd generations.. yes they look good, bigger and etc i just dont think the quality is as good. look to see issues come up when the trucks get over 80-90k miles..

Reconsider your bias against Chevy trucks. My Suburban has been 100% solid through 104K miles... no problems and still running like new. My 1988 Chevy pickup has 204K and going strong.

My friend inherited a '99 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.7 V8 from his father and it's been so-so so far. Right before he inherited it, it needed a new alternator. The paint's peeling off in a lot of places, the doors don't like to close properly and squeak pretty bad, the heater went out during the worst part of winter, and the tires keep going flat (but that's not the truck's fault, probably just needs new tires). It's not bad though, especially for having over 129,000 miles on it. Has plenty of power and the 4WD is great in our winters.
