Anyone know the oil capacity for a 22R 1982 celica

Well, I just did an oil change on my 1982 Celica (first time). I went and bought some Rhino Ramps so I could reach the filter. I figured that with the front end jacked up 6.5 inches I'd still drain most of the oil.

So, warmed it up, let it drain for while. Celica manual says it takes 4.9 quarts with filter. So, I added about 3.7 and went to check the level. And, it's over the full line.

Now, maybe having it jacked up kept some in, but a quart?? I've been googling and see people saying that some 22Rs fill at 4 quarts (and I think they are referring to trucks). I know from experience that manuals aren't always accurate. I wonder if it's possible a 22R Celica could fill at less than 4 quarts. Anyone know?

I want to figure this out so I can determine if filling on the ramps is feasible or truly leaving a lot of oil in the engine.

Thanks

Thanks for looking that up. If that's accurate than somehow draining on ramps left a large amount of oil in there. I changed the filter (PureOne).

So, for me to add 3.7 (maybe 3.8) quarts, with a new filter, and have it be over the full line means a lot was there.

Or, it holds less than either Toyota (4.9) or Amsoil (4.1) say.

It's probably somewhere between 1/8" to 1/4" over (closer to the high side). I'm most concerned with figuring it out because I'd like to know how much old oil is in there. If it's close to a quart then I need to rethink my ramp system (which would be a shame, since I just bought them, like them, and was able to reach the filter).

Where is the drain plug located ? At the side of the oil pan or at the rear of the pan ?

If the drain plug is at the side of the oil pan then using a ramp will not get most oil out, to get most oil out you need to raise the other side up several inches.

Originally they used the PH8A sized filter on this engine.Sometime in the 90's they went to the 3614 sized filter so your capacity is quite a bit less if you are using the small filter.

I wouldn't put less than 5 quarts in that engine. If the crankshaft hits
the oil at 5 quarts, then they screwed up with the design of that engine.
