So I decided that I would like to try out golf. I have only played two or three times but really enjoyed it. Any tips on how to get started and what to get? Of course I hav to wait for the weather to shape up before I can do anything, but I wanted to know in advance. Tia!

Save yourself the time, money, and frustration and pick up a different sport/hobby. Just kidding... I'm a golfer. I just feel that way after most rounds.

I would suggest a couple of things:

1) Find someplace where you can get some lessons at a reasonable price from a golf instructor. Group lessons can be a good way to get started and don't cost as much as private lessons.

2) Don't invest a lot of money in brand new, top brand equipment. You could easily drop $1K and find that you don't really like the game. Get something used and relatively cheap. If you find that you're going to keep playing, then you can upgrade your equipment.

Many golfers have several sets of clubs. Most would love to sell you a set.

Also, during your first season take the following clubs out of your bag: Driver and 3 iron. Buy "found" golf balls ... lots of em'

I don't play, but this game can get interesting. I like golf courses more than a game. I used to work for Valhalla Golf club, really beautiful place, with quite a bit famous people hanging around.
Otherwise agree with previous poster. Local country club should do it for start.

For the time being start with borrowed or rental clubs until you either get somewhat consistent or get some lessons. Once you get consistent, you can get equipment. Until then, no equipment can help an inconsistent swing.

i played put-put 2-3 times.. it was enjoyable. when i think of golf i think of three things

Bill Murray
whole Sundays
Retirement time well spent.

ive got 15 years till my minium retirement date, so ive got time to think it over some more.

As others have suggested I would get lessons if you can afford them. I would also spend time on a driving range so you can practice and have some idea of how far you hit each club. Most will let you rent clubs. A good place to find used clubs online is global golf.

Buy a good name used iron...Callaway X-12, a good beginner set but also when you get better at golf it will please you. Reason New clubs you are paying a premium ...Pro Golfer's endorsement....old clubs lose their value quickly, marketing.

If you are serious on golfing I'd recommend lessons to get the right swing.

Pro golfers spend hours and hours on the driving range to perfect their swing for distant and accuracy ...also driving range balls are made to fall 10 yards shorter than normal balls. So you need to make an adjustment on the course.

I'd recommend the TaylorMade Noodle Golf Balls overall for distance and putting. Best is talk with a golf instructor to get started in the game.

I tried it twice about 10 years ago, and there won't be a third time. I found it to be a boring waste of my time. The gentlemen with whom I golfed claimed it was great exercise, while we rode around in carts and mostly stood around pretending to be interested in the person taking the shot.

I used to play a lot of golf. I was pretty good, had a 6-7 handicap for a few years.

Its gotten to be too expensive these days. I got tired of paying $50+ for a round.

Now my wife and I hack it around the course a couple times a summer.
