Anyone Excited about iPhone 17

We are a magsafe home as oilBabe wasn't good about plugging her phone in.

Now that it's just place it on a MagSafe cradle in her car or at home, seldom is there a dead battery issue.

I also carry one when we travel as she can use up the battery taking photos et al. So I carry a battery that will charge up her phone at least once.

In other words, the cable doesn't matter to us.

I just bought a Motorola G Power 2024 version and I really like it. I'm sure that this new Apple phone would be better, but this particular Motorola is way better than my old Motorola G7 Plus exceeds my needs at the moment. I also suspect that phone manufacturers can get by just fine off normal replacement from phones that break.

It was the first time I watched an Apple event. They can certainly make a production out of a new product launch.
I believe the event was all filmed before release day. The production quality of the event was completely astoundingly high. It's worth watching just for the production quality even if you are not part of the Apple Borg.

Looks like the base iPhone 17 costs $800 and the ProMax is $1200. Could be worse. Especially if you can deduct the cost as a business expense.

I recently upgraded my Samsung S21 to a Google Pixel 9, in large part because the Samsung battery was getting weak, but even more so, because I got a killer deal on the P9.

In terms of running your old phone until it dies, I commend the thought, but realize that updates stop on all phones at some point. Samsung, Google, and Apple seem to support longer than most. Something like 7 years?

My S21 was on it's last update, ending in less than a year. I'm not sure how critical this is, but for sure I wouldn't use it to access bank account info if it's out of date. That relegates many old phones to the scrap pile. I suppose if you only use it for a phone, never using online, it can last longer, though.

I bought a 16E and I am amazed at how long the battery lasts. I charge it about once a week and it's about 40% when I do. It will do AI so I'm set for a long while. Camera is nt as good as the other 16's but it's fine for me.

Kids and wife had iPhones for a long time as she wanted the facetime stuff when they were in school/sports to call when free at practice etc. I held on to my old Galaxy until 2G was having connection issues as it was being phased out. I kept getting dropped calls, no connection etc while driving to bring my son stuff in Aug 2018. I was tired of blurry videos from wife's/kids phones due to Apple/Android non compatible stuff.

At that point my wife got a new iPhone, maybe an 8, I got her old one. From then the kids got new ones based on phone issues, internal connection things, dying battery etc. Upgrade with warranty/insurance and promotions made things easier. During college/grad school the kids got newer stuff to make it easier with macbook/ipad/phone sync for all their notes and projects. Currently we all have a 16 version, 1 regular, 2 pro, 1 plus, 1 promax. As they wear or break then maybe newer version if no issues no need for latest just to have.

Like others if all stays working might be iphone 20 on next round.

I've had a 13 since new and I am ready to upgrade. I wanted to go into the Pro but I don't like the look of the new ones. The regular 17 looks to be a nice option but all the pastel colors are lame. That stuff is probably not a deal breaker though. I wish they still looked like the 13/14 Pro.

...And I still hold a grudge to Apple for switching to USB-C but still beats the quality and operating system of Android.
The EU forced Apple to switch to USB. Zero choice in the matter, they fought it and lost.
It only made sense as a company to do the same in the USA rather than have all phone models with different ports dependent on what country they are sold.

I thought it was interesting they recorded the even on the 17 Pro series of phones. Of course, post production was on a Mac.

I also want to visit that Apple store in NYC :)

I have the 13 pro max and it seems to do almost everything a 17 can do with a couple exceptions. Since I had the apple store put in a new battery last fall, it's running great. Seems like all new phones now are just incremental changes I wont start looking at a new one till at least next year

iphone 14 still uses the Apple connector plug. Still widely used for business phones. My son just got one last week, and I gave him my old cable because Apple doesn't provide one with the phone.

Pretty sure they did last years on an iPhone 16 Pro, not sure about the year before that.

I agree, new phones are incremental. I can't think of what would be OMG jaw dropping that they can put in a phone but I'm sure someone is thinking about it.

The first iPhone with the USB C connector was the 15. I have a love/hate with USB C.

By looks USB C = USB C
By capability USB C ≠ USB C

And the capability range is massive from charge only up to 120Gbps (Thunderbolt 5) of data transfer and everything in between.

I never run out and get a new phone just because a new one was released and I try to keep mine 3-4 years. I'll buy whichever model is out when I need a new one but my current phone is only about a year old.

Before we were handing down our phones, we kept them longer.

However, since a device stays in the family about 4 years, I don't feel bad about upgrading oilBabe's phone every other year.

Last year? I'm talking this year.
iPhone 14 was the last model released in September 2022 to use Apple‘s exclusive lightening port.iPhone 14 is now three model years old and officially discontinued in February 2025.

Starting with the iPhone 15 in September 2023 all phones come with USB-C

I was planning up upgrading my 14 Pro Max and Airpod pro 2's but I'm not sure now.
Why would they not offer the pro models in black? I read it was the best selling color?

I really don't mind my 14PM but last upgrade I waited 4 years (from a iphone X) and it felt like a massive upgrade so I told myself I would only wait 2 or 3 years next time but now here we are 3 years in and I can't say I'm really dying to upgrade. It's a business write off for me so that offsets the cost some so I was planning to upgrade but we'll see.
