Anyone cut open an Amsoil EaO filter?

Just wanted to share this and check with others if they've seen the same nitrile anti-drain back valve in the new EAOM motorcycle filters.

I recently recieved three EAOM134 filters for my 02 Road King. The first thing I noticed is that they did not have the orange silicone anti-drain back valve as bragged about in AMSOIL literature. The valve is black, I suspect it's nitrile. I've questioned the AMSOIL distributor for assurance that the filers are not repackaged SMF 134. filters.

My EaOM136C V-Rod filter has the orange valve.

Just got my first Amsoil filter for my 07 Odyssey V6 3.5 L iVTEC (EaO13). I've never been so thrilled to get a filter.

I think I will go for a 3X OCI (~12,000-15,000 mi). I decided to use the Honda Genuine HG 5W-20 (Exxon Superflow?) for the first three changes. I may switch over to synthetic at 20,000 miles. I plan to do UOA every 4-5000 miles at the oil change just to see how things look.

Is a 3X OCI (12-15000 miles on dino) with this filter overly optimistic? Is the Honda Genuine HG 5W-20 as good as Castrol GTX (my other dino choice)? It looks like its "specially formulated" for Honda/Acura engines.

If you like the media in the Amsoil EaO Filters, you might want to check out the higher quality Fleetguard Filters. I just cut open a Fleetguard FL16002 Filter. Pictures area at http://home.earthlink.net/~cewhite3nc/id17.html . It appears to use the same type of media as the EaO filters, and at least for the EaO11 size, the Fleetguard filter has more media. Unfortunately, the Fleetguard Filter uses a nitrile anti-drain back valve.

Supposedly nitrile ADBV are subject to hardening with age and use. When they harden, they may no longer seal properly and this may allow the oil to drain back out of the oil system. For a push rod engine this may not be a big deal. For some overhead cam engines, particularly ones that use oil pressure operated chain tensioners and hydraulic lash adjusters, this is more important. From personal experience I can attest that Ford Modular engines can make unpleasant start-up noises if you use a filter with a leak prone ADBV. Ford has changed all their filters for overhead cam engines over to silicone ADBVs. The silicone ADBV are less prone to hardening and seal better over a longer period of time.
