^^^ Wear ear plugs while doing anything noisy ... even if it's just mowing the lawn or hammering nails. It all adds up to take it's toll.

There's a "noise floor" for nerves. Go into a dark closet and open your eyes. Your mind will turn up the gain enough, you'll start quasi-hallucinating.

But if you close your eyes, your mind will think, ah, this is how it's supposed to be.

Mild tinnunitis is similar.

Have had it ever since I went to a Bruce Springsteen concert in the 80's. I read that someone actually sued him for hearing damage from that show. Unbelievably loud.

Being around jet engines and a few years as a car audio enthusiast made it many orders of magnitude worse. The ringing in my ears as I type this is as loud as ever. Very slight hearing loss in my left ear but other than that everything tested normal. Just very loud ringing.

Whoever cures tinnitus will be my hero forever.

Oh an I sleep with an electric fan on now. That really helps.

I've had it since I was little. I thought it was normal all those years.

I now wear hearing protection whenever possible. Mowing, shooting etc.

I sleep with a fan on. Helps immensely. During the day, there's usually enough noise around not to notice it, but at night or in any quiet situation, it's loud. I'm gonna try Ga129's technique and see what happens.

Had it for decades. A real annoyance sometimes.

Best thing for mine has been Ginkgo Biloba. Takes just a few capsules to reduce it by more than half...

Prevention, prevention prevention. Always always wear ear plugs when around machinery, guns, loud music, other loud noise. Don't be proud, be smart.

Once you hurt your hearing, you can't get it back. It also degrades as you get older naturally.

Tinnitus...is awful. I have had it for 20+ years. I have tried many many things to get rid of it but nothing has worked (dietary, noise therapy etc).

I do love the sound of rain as it seems to lessen the effect.

It is one factor of a few that contribute. My wife never in her life exposed herself to loud noises in life style, music or work place and has it. She has bearing loss coupled to it also.

One of my workmates swears by green tea.

^^^THIS is what I try to explain to all of the kids over on LS1tech.com, who want STUPID LOUD exhaust systems on their f bodies, as well as championship competition level sound systems.

They always quote the old cliched "If it's too loud, you are too old" bee ess, to which I reply, "When (and IF) you get 'old', you will NOT hear ANYTHING, loud OR quiet!".

dailydriver, like a couple of the posters have said, it can be a strang mix.

I'm 47, 27 of those years being in the power, and I have always been careful (in 1990, there was no awareness in Oz, but as soon as we were aware, I was careful), and I stress to the younuns that they MUST be careful.

I rarely attend concerts, but got ribbed at Iron Maiden, for wearing earplugs...these kids will be talking on Wednesday about their ears still ringing...I remind them that one day it won't stop.

Had my hearing tested for work reasons the other day, and the hearing is still there, perfect at low end, and 10dB loss at the 6,000Hz and up frequencies, about par with my age, and WAY ahead of my industry.

The turbines ARE quieter than they were 20 years ago...the meter still says 110dB, I don't register the same.

How do you think their ears are doing? The guy in the driver's seat does this day-in/day-out based on the hundreds of his YouTube videos. My ears hurt just watching these videos!
