Any reason to upgrade fluid in 2002 4l60e?

I drop the pan and change the filter every 15-20,000 miles and top off with SuperTech Dexron III. It currently has 130,000 miles on it, with no issues. Wal-Mart has the Dex IV and Mercon V for $1 more a quart than the Dex. III. For such a small amount of money, would you upgrade, or go with what has been working?

I would start using Dexron V1. It is a higher quality fluid and is backward compatible. I think Dexron V1 could easily handle 30,000 mile changes.

Or you could upgrade to Amsoil ATF and potentially stop changing your ATF so often. I added a large cooler and inline filter when changing over to Amsoil (complete flush) almost 170k miles ago and it still looks and smells like new fluid. Still shifts great, too. We tow heavy stuff through the mountains sometimes. This 700R4 has almost 300k miles on it and never touched except to change pan filter at 130k miles (unit's first fluid change when we bought it).

At least upgrade to a better spec oil. 30-50k miles would then be the earliest I would change it.

we run Amsoil in a fleet of GM V8 RWD trucks, vans and pickups.

It works great and I can't find anything wrong with it.

But Dex VI is a highly technologically advanced fluid. It may equal anything Amsoil has for a GM product.

I've been using Dex VI in my GM vehicles that originally had Dex III. Great results and definitely a better fluid. Shift performance did not change when I made the switch in either my 4T65E or 4L60E transmissions.

dex 6 is rated for 100k miles so I would think you could do 50k on it easy with out a worry. Which cuts your changes in half and that alone would save more than the dollar a quart.

I'd upgrade to MercV or DexronVI and stick with your intervals since they're only partial drain/refills.

Get a drainplug for your pan since the filter is good for 2-3 intervals.

I'd agree on the intervals for a 4L60E. I'm doing 10k mile intervals draining with a drain plug and changing an external can filter that I've added. It only takes a little over 3 quarts to do this so I'm doing it more often due to the small % changed each time. If you have a deep pan you might change slightly more but not a noticable increase in %.

With my 4T65E I change out 7.5 quarts on a pan drop and 30k seems fine with that car for transmission OCI's.

FYI, there is no such thing as DEXRON IV. Did you mean DEXRON VI? DEXRON VI is far superior to DEXRON III and is the approved GM upgrade for all GM automatic transmissions that came with a DEXRON III fluid.

I swear I saw Dex IV at Wal Mart, but have never seen Dex VI. When the time is due for me to drop the pan on my 02 Olds, will I be okay with filling it back up with Dex VI, considering that the rest of the fluid that I can't drain by dropping the pan will be Dex III?

I might have mixed up the "Dex IV" that I thought I saw at Wal Mart with Dex VI... dog gone Roman numerals! I'm going to get some Dex VI when I put a shift kit in my 4T65E... it claims to help prevent the P1811 code...

+1 definitely get a plug kit or new pan with a drain plug in it. If you get the kit have someone weld the plug housing in for you.
