Any other uses for Mobil 1 ATF fluid?

I have the chance to acquire 5 free gallons of mobil 1 synthetic atf fluid that had only been run for about 5 minutes in a backhoe hydraulic system(wrong fluid). Does anyone know what else I could use this fluid for besides the obvious use in an automatic transmission?

Power steering systems only hold 1 or 2 quarts. With that much fluid you can do a really thorough fluid exchange through the transmission cooler lines and flush the power steering.

Many Toyota FWD vehicles have a seperate diff that requires ATF.
Many manufacturers of 4WD vehicles require ATF in the transfer case.
Some motorcycles use ATF in the suspension forks.

I would not use the used fluid from a backhoe even if it were free and was in there for 5 mins. The fluid is now contaminated with hydraulic fluid or whatever fluid was in that backhoe before the M1 went in.

The first fluid used in hydraulic applications was water.

It may not be the best choice, but I do not understand why the fluid did not work.

Pump and seals are what is at play .... but I still wonder.

Very low lubricity
Corrosion problems
Low vapor pressure
etc. etc.

It still has it's place as a hydraulic fluid, but for the most part there are better fluids.

It does a good job turning power turbines in dams.

I've used water in journal bearing design with good results, but I used it because of the difficulty of using other fluids in that particular application, not because it's a great fluid for the job.

I'd use it as a flush for a trans that is near expiration and you want to extend the time before rebuild. It's good stuff, but it's contaminated with [censored] knows what. I wouldn't use it as a replacement fluid in a high end application.

Figure better to revive an old thread start new... Any new ideas of ways to use a large quantity of used ATF? Would it hold any value for underbody oiling in the salt belt?

If your SD is a diesel just filter the ATF really well and pour it in the tank. The 7.3L will burn just about anything if it is well filtered. I used to run waste atf in my truck before I built my vegetable oil system for my truck. Ran better on ATF than it does on the ULSD [censored] we have to buy.

I run 1 qt of either 2-cycle oil or ATF in the diesel tank as a lubrication enhancer to the ULSD, and usually like to add a gallon or two of 500ppm low sulfur kerosene to the mix. Only problem with burning ATF for fuel is the stupid color, and in the cold your engine won't like it much.
