Are there any oils out there in the 3.5 - 3.8 HTHS range that offer the same benefits ( LSPI test / timing chain etc..) of a 5w30 Dexos 1 Gen 2 rated oil ? The turbo engine in our Regal gets pushed pretty hard loaded with 4 people driving over mountain passes in Colorado. Thanks

There are a number of Dexos2 oils available (Mobil 1 ESP, AC Delco Dexos2, etc.) that are robust (3.5 HTHS) and offer LSPI protection. Being low SAPS/TBN, however, they're not a good candidate for extended OCIs.

I can’t remember what the difference is between SN plus & Dexos1 Gen2 oils. I’m going to keep the OCI @5k so low SAPS shouldn’t matter. Is their a list or reference for the higher viscosity oils that offer LSPI protection ?

SN Plus are basically conventional oils, so the primary difference between that and a dexos1 oil would be timing chain wear and deposits, dexos1 being the higher spec of the two. Both fight LSPI well (mainly due to low-ish calcium).

If your Regal is off-warranty, then a dexos2 oil, really meant for diesels and low-sulphur gasoline (Euro, U.S. recently) engines, would work well.
Any dexos2 oil you find, like M1 ESP 5w30 would work.

Another option (I'd do if I were you) is to run a PAO+ester oil like Ravenol DXG 5w30 (HTHS=3.1, above the minimum 2.9 at least). That's a little extra margin if you push an engine hard. Great in turbo engines of course. Robust oily stuff. Blauparts may be the best source of it. https://www.blauparts.com/ravenol-motor-oil-dxg-5w30-5l.html or Amazon.com has it I think.

Herewith is a list of approved Dexos2 oils that provide LSPI protection. I believe that all of them meet ACEA A3/B4 (gas) and ACEA C3 (diesel) requirements (HTHS = 3.5 min).

Too bad Xom changed M1R 4T real synthetic That stuff was great to "amend" the sump of marginal oils. It was widely available at most fake autoparts stores and Walmart - but at 10 bucks a quart. at least it was REAL syn

Usually subbing 1qt into 4 making 5 would do it.

Isn't AC Delco oil made by Mobil? The dealer here told me a qt of the 0w-20 was $6.50 a qt. Not to bad but not that great and I would think it would be a great oil.

I think that's true. I've always considered AC-Delco oil equivalent to Mobil Super Synthetic, their lower-tier full syn oil. Not an awful price. Of course, walmart beats it. SuperTech 0w20 dexos1 Gen2 oil there is comparable to AC-Delco's oil.

All Mobil 1 flavors have been low-calcium for about 8 years now. That made them LSPI resistant.

Not the various M1 0W40 flavors I've seen so far, but I think they have a dexos2 product now that I assume is low calcium.

Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 5W30 has a highest HTHS I've seen for a d1G2 oil at 3.2 .

I'd say dexos2 is the best way to go at the moment as none of the SN+ oils I've actually seen have been higher HTHS...dexos2 has to be above 3.5 .

Yep, if you want LSPI protection and high (3.5 min) HTHS, a Dexos 2 oil is the way to go.

Warranty is an important consideration and the Owner's Manual should specify the recommended/required oil. If the selected Dexos2 oil doesn't meet the requirements, I wouldn't use it.

Strictly speaking, I would think you are "supposed" to be running a dexos1 Gen 2 oil as it is the successor to the dexos1 that I would assume your manual calls out.

That is a tough question. Europe uses dexos2 in diesels and gasoline engines alike. For example, Ravenol LSG 5w30 (dexos2) is listed to use in a 2014 Buick 2.0T on Ravenol's euro website. Question is, does GM now recognize that U.S. levels of sulphur in gasoline is very euro-like (low) now? Which means dexos2 is fine to run. Then there is the promise GM makes to the EPA that whatever oil it uses to set their MPG window sticker values is THE one-and-only oil it will "allow" consumers to use. ..... So, I don't know what the warranty department at GM would do.

Since this is a '14 Buick, you're probably about out of powertrain warranty anyway, so I say go ahead and use a dexos2-rated oil if you want.
2019 Corvettes are going to a Mobil dexos2 0w40 that looks good too, pick that one, available at Chevy dealerships for now.

You don't have to since there are premium dexos1 5w30 oils out there, and Valvoline Full Syn is HTHS=3.2, Ravenol DXG is HTHS=3.1, exceeding the minimums.

You might like something that's dexos2, such as Valvoline MST 5w30 on sale at Napa for $5.49/qt, or PP Euro L 5w30 at Walmart

I'm sure this varies by region, but that PP Euro L disappeared from the WMs around me some time ago!
They don't carry any dexos2 oils in jugs and I haven't looked that carefully at the quarts...
