Any of you folks Military Veterans?

I spent most of the 1990s in the Army on active duty, as well as in the National Guard -- I was 11B (Infantry) and spent a big chunk of it on various peacekeeping rotations in the Balkans.

Grew up watching the nightly TV news... the never-ending Vietnam Conflict.

Present for the evacuation in 1975.
Then ran off to assist in getting the SS Mayaguez from the Cambodians who pirated the ship.

Cold War shenanigans here and there.

I have always been a reader, mostly non-fiction, and devoted a LOT of reading time to all aspects of the Vietnam Conflict.

A war that should never have been fought.

It would require MANY pages to explain my belief.

Realize that those who answered the call to duty were pawns in a MUCH bigger game and deserve HUGE accolades for doing what was requested of them.

Here is one way to approach the topic.

Civil War 1861 to 1865. Make believe time.

Britain assists the Confederacy.

British troops attack the Union and the Union troops in the south.

More than a few southerners take offense to foreigners being there.

British can not easily determine who the enemy is because the Union has to use guerilla methods to fight the foes.

British harm and kill Union folks AND southerners.

Resentment grows.

It is a no-win scenario for the British troops.

It was British leaders who sent their troops far away to fight in a civil war that should have been left for those directly involved to settle.

I guess that is an anecdotal way of making a point.

Uncle Jim enlisted in the Marine Corps around 8 months before Pearl Harbor.

Was present for Guadalcanal and the "island hopping" campaign.

Severely injured on Saipan... a year in the hospital back in the states.

War ends and he is discharged.

A few years go by and he runs into an officer he knew during WW 2. Talks Uncle Jim into joining the Marine Corps reserve. The extra money was helpful and they got to "play war" one weekend per month and 2 weeks in the summer.

He was given his old rank of Gunnery (Gunny) Sargent.

Then a few months later..... Korea.

Land at Inchon then at the Frozen Chosin. All the way up then 2/3rd of the way back when shot and ended up in the hospital in the Pusan area.

Healed up and sent to guard the USA embassy in...... Saigon. When the French were subjecting the place to their horrid brand of colonialism that the USA could have and, in my OPINION, should have prevented as Ho Chi Minh begged the USA to do.

The Marines lived in a compound close to the embassy. They had a pet monkey named Ho Chi trained to throw its feces at military officers. The monkey could differentiate between enlisted and officer uniforms.

After that task back home and discharged.

No more reserves for Jim!!!!!

Dad was WW 2 pacific Theater but was a 20mm anti-aircraft gunner on a troop ship.

Mom's dad's brother was killed at Omaha Beach during the D-Day thing. Buried at the USA cemetery near there.

I love pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pride of the 7th Fleet. Half-way to Saigon to supposedly prevent the NVA taking the city. We felt akin to Custer and his crew. 248 of us with no support with an estimated 60,000 NVA and Viet Cong ahead. Around the half-way point new orders arrived. No defending... evacuate!!! The captain swung that ship around and we FLEW down that river and
we were exultant when the open sea was reached!!!!!!

Next overseas deployment was bizarre. 600 squids and 1,800 Marines. More concentrated craziness than even Washington DC!!!!!!!

Then the time spent on a cruiser designed to protect aircraft carriers. Amazing technology for its time. The Sterret was a test platform for the anti-ship missile, the Harpoon. The first test missile we launched devastated the target, sinking it. The Commies were the bad guys back then.
