Want to go completely through my LT155 John Deere and I can't find anything on how much of the 5w30 trans oil to get for this thing??? I saw some posts on here about some that have done it but no one mentioned how much was in there. Please help. Thanks!

Thanks. I had seen that and quickly scanned through it. No where did it state what amount of oil was used. I ended going to turf torq's sight and I think I am on the right track now.

agreed, good find, i have some jd technical manuals on the lt series, and i couldnt find an answer in there

Yes. I spoke to a JD technician and they don't know or at least weren't forth coming on information. I just find it sooooo odd they recomend motor oil and also they specified different oils when new and when serviced. I read in that other link listed on this website someone is using Amsoil's 5w30 hydro synthetic oil that's used in most hydro transmissions. I'm now riding the fence whether to use that or motor oil

since youve found this TT site, id lean more to using what they spec or advise over jd, as TT, not deere made the componet after all

im not sure, thats quite a viscosity spread. i was looking thru my lx188 owners manual, and it says 10w30, then goes on to say "dont change fluid as its a sealed unit", specing a fluid then saying basically dont change it, makes no sense to me

I hear ya! I sent an email to Amsoil Tech so we'll see what they have to say.

id watch their reccomendation viscosity wise, ive seen them spec a different viscosity than the manufacture (TT), id defineatly go with the TT recommended viscosity/fluid, but if they say a viscosity of xw50 id go for it as im assuming thats what you came up with via TT, 5w50 seems a bit strange to me as a hydro transmission spec, many do spec 20w50 however

You don't.. Or I should say, you don't need to. All you need is a 5w40, 15w40 or a 20w50 if your climate is super hot. You can just go with another batch of 10w30 like TT(supposedly) does from the factory, but people tend to go more heavy-duty if they go through all the bother of changing the oil on a broken-in unit with hours on it.

Amsoil hydrostatic oils also do really well in these and isn't a bad idea for such a small system capacity.

Yes I hope that's what Amsoil says. I read the specs on it and it should work. I too know others on the web has use this Amsoil in a simular transmission and haven't complained. Actually I read a few that sounds like it ran better.

Amsoil recomends their 20w-50 premium synthetic oil for this transmission. So I guess I will get 3 quarts of it.

im curious as to how many hrs are on the machiene, and as to how discolored it comes out. i picked up an lx188 last month and i dumped the hydro fluid, tho not reccomened via oweners manual, so i highly doubt it had ever been changed, and no hr meter on unit, it was discolored but not that discolored (black), i put 2.5 qts mobil clean 10w30 in it. So im kinda saying amsoil might be a bit overkill, but your mind is made up, and based on condition of fluid you dump, w amsoil you may deem it your last change needed

Yep, the main thing is you've got good clean oil in there that hasn't been cooked to death. I've seen K51's with over a 1000hrs on them and still functioning fine. Doesn't sound like many hours, but that actually is for a lighter duty hydrostatic trans.

People tend to never clean the hydro housing off, so they overheat, or they are unaware of a missing fan blade or three. A synthetic would take those conditions better, but a BITOGer would have noticed this and dumped and filled 3x by then anyway.

Well, I sell Amsoil so my price isn't that bad (still plenty bad though;) ) The previous owner of this tractor was an elderly man and it appears from all the notes in the owners manual he was pretty good on maintenance. It's just that I am anal and ANYTHING I buy I go through all the fluids.

i hate to say this (knocking deere and promoting amsoil

), but no doubt your putting a (how do i say it without saying better), ok, i cant, your putting a better fluid in it, and again, i doubt youll ever need to change it again! but do keep us posted on contidion of fluid you drain out

Yup sure will. The only thing that I won't be able to tell up front is the hours on the old stuff since I don't have a hour meter
