Any good reason Mobil 1 costs more?

I will concur with RogerKluger. Mobil 1 is VERY expensive in Australia. If it was the same price as the Group III synthetics I wouldn't worry but it is significantly more. When asked for the issue to be clarified, all Mobil can say is "base oils are not important" etc and they refuse to state that Mobil 1 oils are still 100% Group IV, which would end the debate.

That is my only issue. I am sure Mobil 1 is still a good oil. However, if I am going to pay extra for Mobil 1, I want it to be siginificantly different from competing products.

For example (Australian dollars):

Mobil 1 10W-30, 0W-40: $80 - 90 per 5L
Mobil 1 5W-50: $70 per 5L
Castrol Edge 5W-30: $50 per 5L
Castrol Edge 0W-40: $70 per 5L
Valvoline Synpower 10W-50: $50 per 5L
Penzoil Platinum 5W-40: $70 per 5L
Shell Ultra 5W-40: $50 per 5L
Penrite SIN: 70$ per 5L across range
Nulon 10W-50: $55 per 5L

And to compare, AMSOIL TRO Group IV 20W-50 is $90 per 5L

Prices around here are tightening up quite a bit. Pennzoil Platinum used to be like 4 bucks while Mobil1EP was up over 6.50. But now closer together. Mobil1 non EP and PP are pretty close right now and so are the others. But M1EP is still much more inline with retail price of Amsoil, RP, and Redline. 2 of the lst three I would take in a heartbeat over M1EP.

Is it proven M1 is GRP3, NO. Is the evidence overwhelming that it could be at this moment a good portion GRP3 in a GRP3 and 4 mix. YUP!!! Look at the other thread recently posted and you can find the link to their patent App for a GRP3 with low viscosity GRP4 to make OW motor oils.... You have to ask yourself, is it???

So if it is still more expensive locally then look carefully at the UOA section and judge for yourself if it is performing for the price you have to pay. Also look at the other commonly available synthetic oil available and research them as well. You may find one you feel is the winner for the price.

Heck you may even look into oil you may have to order such as Redline and Amsoil as it is nice not having to goto the store.

In a NYC hotel a bottle of Budweiser will go for about 8 bucks. Anyone want to guess why?

I won't use a non-synthetic if it was given to me.

Why? We've seen more than enough evidence on here that conventional oil can get the job done extremely well. Synthetics definitely are better for long drain intervals, extremely cold weather and extremely high oil temps. But for 99% of the driving public they can get a very long life out of their engines by using a good conventional oil changed every 5-6k.

Maybe he has a Corvette that does not have an oil cooler and thus requires Synthetic. Maybe he just likes using top of the line products. I waffle back and forth on that issue myself. Got 5 qts of Havoline Conventional that I did not use and installed Amsoil.

Shrug.

There's two ways to look at it. I agree Mobil 1 is expensive as you mentioned, but I would also argue $50 is a awful lot to pay for Group 3 like Castrol, Valvoline, Shell, etc etc.

C'mon folks, let's keep it focussed on the message, not the messengers. There are no "M1 Police" or "PP Police" here. I don't care which oil any of you prefer, and you're more then welcome to argue your case for your favorite oil until everyone else is dead horsing the dead horse emoticon.

What WILL draw moderator action is intemperate arguments that are disrespectful of other members, flagrantly baseless comments, and other violations of the published board rules. Please don't pick nits with how I've described this -- it's just a quick description of the general policy.

So why does M1 typically cost more? Economics. Supply and demand. Marketed product image. But most of all, because customers are still paying for it. Will they get through this latest round of "product modifications"? Most certainly yes, though there image here is certainly tarnished. It will be most interesting to see how all this plays out, but I suspect that "Joe Average customer" is so well indoctrinated, and relatively unaware, that what is a huge flap to us will go largely (if not totally) unnoticed by the vast majority of the customer base.

Because uneducated people are still buying it and believing it's the best stuff out there. I remember reading a lot of posts on an Integra forum I frequent about many members using it in their B18 motor, and having great results with it. These posts were before the whole Group III/Group IV fiasco. I would've purchased it had I not found this site and found better (in my opinion) alternatives.
