Let us assume for a moment that Exxon/Mobil has gone to Group III oils for most or all of the Mobil 1 oil viscosities and types. There are other Group III oils that cost less like Pennzoil Platinum. Is there any good reason why Mobil 1 should cost more? Such as evidence that Mobil 1 has superior additives or whatever?

It is the same reason that honda and toyota cost more........because everyone seems to think it is worth more.

Contrary to the popular belief, PP is not much cheaper than M1. Only few cents at the local walmart I've been to. M1 was in 5 ltr jug and PP was in 1 ltr bottles. Over 5 bottles, you'd probably save a buck.

I'd agree with what seth said. M1 is on sale (at least in Caada) enough that it is,t really THAT much more expensive than any other synthetic, in fact, it is often less. For the last month or more, W-M, C-T, Partssource have all had 5.4 litres of Mobil 1 5W and 10w30 availiable for about $31.00. That works out to about $5.90/litre, which is better than the $6.00 - $8.50/litre most syns sell for....if you look for these sales, you can probably saty stocked with M1 on regular basis than most synthetics.....

Now, now, the common wisdom is that M1 is watered down, overpriced swill. You two aren't helping that image.

Mobil1 is about $1.80 more than PP in qart bottles and a 5 quart jug is about $5 more than a PP jug where I am.

The answer to that question in my area is "its not". At only
$5 a qt its pretty reasonably priced, Castrol Syntec cost much more and PP is only .20 to .25 cheaper, hardly a bargain in my opinion. I'd prefer M! over PP with those meager savings.

Mystic- has it been proven that "Exxon/Mobil has gone to Group III oils for most or all of the Mobil 1 oil viscosities and types"?

Has GC even been tested to see if the same isn't true for some of their popular weights?

I hear a lot about how expensive Mobil 1 is these days compared to some of the other (group III) synthetics. But keep in mind that when Mobil 1 first came out in the early to mid 1970's (only in 5W-20), it was $3.00 per quart. Sounds cheap but remember that was back when gas was still well under $1.00 per gallon even after the 1973-4 Arab oil embargo. The point is, compared to when it first came out and was the only game in town, Mobil 1 today is somewhat of a bargain.

This may be why he said "Assume for a moment..."

GC? Are you asking about German Castrol? If so, it only comes in one weight.

Where I live at the Wal-Mart the Mobil 1 was considerably more expensive than the Pennzoil Platinum. I think the Mobil 1 was something like $23.00 per 5 quart container. The PP was something like $19.00. But the Motorcraft semi-synthetic and Valvoline conventional oil were really good bargains.

Mystic all you need is 5w30 all year in your climate , my picks in order Havoline , Valvoline , Motorcraft you dont need a synthetic .

Well, considering the size of ExxonMobil and their overall advertising budget, I would think that Mobil 1 specific advertising would be such a small drop in the bucket that it might add a penny a qt, or maybe a penny a gallon, to the wholesale cost.
Mobil 1 has proven to be an excellent product over the past almost 30 years. Haven't seen anything that would substantiate that it is not still an excellent product.
Base stocks are pricey, additive packages are pricey. Whatever suits you--some folks will drink "Dixie Belle" gin, while others insist on Beefeater, Tanqueray, or Bombay Sapphire. Personally, if I couldn't, or wouldn't, use or get AMSOIL, I'd go with Mobil 1. I won't use a non-synthetic if it was given to me.

I was wondering if anything had been proven for ANYTHING other than the one sample and test? I searched. Simple answer: no.

OK- great. Now how about you actually try to answer the question posed?
