My 01 v-6 escape with 152k miles , just started the flashing overdrive light. When it does this it shifts rougher from 1-2 and 2-3. It is throwing a p1744 code. The fluid has been changed every 10 k on this trans. It is intermittant. Sometimes i can throw it in neutal and shut it it off an restart it and it is normal. A trans shop has quoted me 1700 to redo the valve body and replace the torque converter etc.

Is this a reasonable fix and is it a reasonable price?

I know little to nothing specific about the CD4E, but in general intermittent transmission problems that can be made to go away by a restart without letting anything cool down are often not a "hard" internal failure. That sounds more like a sensor kicking out spurious readings and the computer going into a fail-safe mode. Now the spurious reading itself *might* be due to a hard internal failure, but it might just be a glitchy sensor, too.

I'd have it checked very thoroughly before assuming it needs a rebuild.

I am unsure if that would correct the issue but 1700 is alright. Have you considered a junkyard transmission with less miles? Typically you can get a used transmission for under $900 and have it installed for less then they are pricing for a valve and torque converter replacement.

Buddy of mine did that on his Escape and was able to find a used transmission with 25k miles on it for $900.

Does it kill the engine if you don't put it in neutral?

If so... it sounds like the lockup torque converter is not releasing. This is controlled by an electronic actuator. (Ford calls it a Modulated Lockup Solenoid MLUS) I have heard of this problem before.

I would have them look into this before replacing the entire transmission.

no, no drivability issue other than it shifts a bit harder in 1-2 when the od light is flashing. vehicle idles and never stalls.
I'm wondering about replacing the tss sensor myself before forking out 1700 bucks .

When my ex-gf's protege did this I replaced the turbine speed sensor. It was some time ago. I don't remember how or why I came to the conclusion. It was around 70 bucks. Might be the same thing for that trans. The symptoms are identical.

Here is something that could help.

looking at the same transmission in a Mazda 626 1996 it appears that transmission has had numerous failures in many vehicles. Recently I talked to a firm that sold a solenoid pack W/short harness for $69 delivered, said it would surely fix my similar problem, (I distrust such absolutism)have seen other similar kits for a little less. Some say white harness fits all, others say white or brown plug - must specify which. I haven't tried it yet. Just FYI.

The tss sensor replacement made no difference. It appears the valve body is worn and not supplying adequate pressure to the lockup torque converter, causing it to slip. I'm not sure i'm going to sink 1700-2000 bucks on this vehicle.
