Almost nobody talks about castrol syntec blend or the regular gtx. I really like syntec blend for $16 at wally world!

Why does castrol have a bad reputation on here?

Some don't like the price or grumble about the company. Of course, this applies to all companies. I used to use it quite a bit, and up here, it's regularly on sale, so can be a very economical choice.

I mainly use GTX simply for nostalgia sake. Castrol was popular in the Jaguars and MGs. Their advertisement logos were on every British racing car in the black and white photos. So I run Castrol in those cars today. I do question their way of selling items and packaging, and use of additives, but at the end of the day, their basic GTX is so much better than the finest oil availiable in 1960. So I have no problem with conventional or syn blend.

I agree for the most part. You can find gtx on sale somewhere for like 12-14 a gallon.
The gtx additive package looks weak on paper, kinda like valvoline however, like Volvoline I've never heard or read any real, provable issues.
And say whatever about their synthetics they are like Mobil in my mind with their truly stand out performer,German castrol.
Mobil has their 0w-40 that is just something special in my eyes, and German castrol is castrol's truly stand out product.
The jury is still out as far as Belgian castrol 0w-40 is concerned. To me it looks like a more modern formulation of the venerable German stuff and there are very few used oil analysis
All in all I only buy their syns when they are 23 a jug at Walmart so I don't have much experience with them but I've got no complains using then when on sale.

Between WM, CT, and Partsource, one of them always has the stuff on special.

GTX is in good standing with me. Used it in an oil-burner 1ZZ and it did very well in slowing consumption vs cheaper oils and believe it or not even Mobil 1. I tried M1 first due to syn having superior ability to resist burnoff but it drank the M1 like water for some reason. GTX did far, far better and although I'm more of a SOPUS guy at the moment I'm sure I'll use Castrol motor oil again at some point in my life.

But I can't end this post without saying that I do hold something against BP for how they handled the Gulf oil spill cleanup.

Ran GTX for several OCIs in my I35 until recently switching her over to the magical world of synthetic

. The VQ35 is known to burn oil but I never had to top off during my 4000-4500 mile GTX OCIs. It's a good oil that can be run with confidence.

Gtx has a weak additive pack compared to other API SN conventionals, you can see it on PQIA. The starting TBN is pretty low and the uoas don't indicate it's amazing either so it's not a top choice when you look at Pyb.

I got good results in my Nissan with Magnatec SP 5W-40 (UOAs around in the diesel section), PCMO in a diesel, for 10,000km and it would go longer by a long shot.

(Got another 7 litres that my Dad had in the shed when he died, and should use that next OCI...maybe...it's green too !!)

Haven't used "GTX" in a long time, like decades. Recently bought a Golf and have started to use and stockpile German Castrol 0w-30. GREAT oil, IMO! Have 5 qt's of synthetic blend 5w-20 which will use on the Focus one day. I'm sure there will be no issues.

I agree. What you said about the way they handled the gulf oil spill clean up is really my only issue with bp. I don't use their oil in my car but used the gtx in my wife's explorer once and it did fine. We use their hdeo ( tection? ) as our bulk oil at work for our lease trucks and some customers rigs and have never seen an oil related failure, not one caused by the oil itself anyways.

I have used Castrol products in their many variations more than any other oil in the last 10-15 years. I have been ticked at them for a while now due to their lack of updating their spec sheets (their HM pds is 4 years old and they changed the formulation nearly 2 years ago) but their oils are very good. They also need to be more forthcoming IMO on common specs competitor's publish as well, like actual CCS and HTHSV.

Those are my beefs and you're right Castrol does not get a ton of love around here.

I am however of the opinion their oils are at least as good as any, and the Edge line up is better than most IMO. Running GC 0w30 right now, but have also used Gold Bottle Ti and man that stuff is fantastic too.

Since being on BITOG I've shifted primarily to SOPUS stuff for conventionals, but Edge remains the synthetic I'm most likely to buy. I dumped GTX 10w30 in everything for years before I came here and never had an oil related issue either, but you could likely say that of any name brand lube these days.

One thing about Castrol, from GTX to Edge, it tends to run quietly in anything I put it in, and I can't say that about some other big names.

My girlfriends Mazda was for the most part run exclusively on GTX and GTX HM from our local wal-mart.

When I started doing oil changes for her, I looked into the fill hole and the valvetrain and head were spotless. I was surprised.

I put in MS5K and ran it for 4k miles and the inside of her engine has darkened.

It has M1EP in it now, but I really wouldn't hesitate to put GTX back in.

I would personally buy GTXHM over GTX. Something tells me it is a little more stout than GTX, plus it has a seal conditioner.

I have used GTX recently and it didn't clean very well. But I think it's obvious that oil makers are creating formulations that are designed to be run exclusively. And I believe all SN rated oils will do a great job and keep an engine clean if run exclusively and are given time to run their course.

EXCEPT NEXTGEN. That stuff is garbage. :P

I've run my share of GTX in the past. No problems with it, but I never ran long intervals either.

Running Edge in three different vehicles right now. 0w-30, 0w-40, and 5w-40. Not so much a fan of the 5w30, although it would probably be fine in the Forester. I've got M1 0w-40 and 5w-40 TTD waiting in the stash. The Forester will be staying on GC for a few OCI's though.

Used to use GTX a lot before I came here, and my switch to SOPUS prods.
My 2 door 83 Cutlass Supreme with 307-4V ran exclusively on GTX and Fram's orange can for 256K miles. Never down from the FULL line in between changes
My 05 Accord ran it's first 101K miles with 5-20 GTX/Syntec exclusively
