i changed out the intake manifold gaskets on my dads 86 Cadillac 4.1 v8, i went to change the oil before starting up the car and i drained three and a half gallons of oil and antifreeze.

so my question is, how soon should i change the oil? i was thinking 100 to 200 miles from now?

any suggestions?

That 4.1 is not GM's shining achievement no matter how it's babied.

I'd change it now and check it every fuel fill for a while.

Did it overheat?

i dont know if dad over heated it or not, he is sort of tight lipped about the whole deal, he bought the car about five years ago at an estate sale.

it had 41 or 42,000 miles on it at the time now it has just under 50k

i found one of the intake bolts loose near the water jacket, the gaskets were not broken or leaking just that one darn loose bolt

Clayton, once i change the oil how soon after this should i change it again?

Yes, change it again after thorough warm-up, especially if he wants to keep it.

yes he does want to keep it, he was all giddy today as i was putting the final touches on it.

i have been very lucky to have such supportive parents, and even though it took me a while to do this for him, i was glad to do it.

i will change the oil after it warms up fully the first time, then again at 500 miles. And then from there see how it reacts?

Duane, that sounds like a plan. If the oil still looks a little milky, cut the 500 mile run short.

How long did it sit and/or get run full of coolant?

it has sat all summer, this spring i put some stop leak in it, and changed the oil, it didnt last one tank of gas, mostly because it wasnt a gasket issue, i suspect the loose intake manifold bolt near the water jacket allowed the the water to seep into the engine once it warmed up.

mom let more of the cat out of the bag today by telling me about there last drive in it, stopping ever so often to add water to the car, now dad does watch the gauges, but that being said the engine appears to be all alum. i wasnt expecting the battery to be dead, so i wasnt ready with a battery charger today, so after work tomorrow i will stop by and hear it run, and change the oil and filter again.

Thank you Guys for the quick responses and support!

dad is sort of funny he has waited all summer for me to fix the car, if he wanted a new one it would be no problem for him financially, but he really seemed to like this car and heck a person she drive what he likes!

i will use the SuperTech oil ! Thank you for the suggestion
