If a filter is advertised as being good upto 10,000 miles based on OEM recommendations abd has full synthetic media and is 99% effective to 35 microns does this really tell you anything? We're can I read to understand more about filters??

35 microns is pretty big "chunks" from what I have read here. I think I have seen here that 20 microns are small enough to not cause much wear on the engine. 35 might be big enough to cause wear if it is circulating through the engine constantly.

What is the difference between a "micron rating" and "beta ratio test" when referring to filters?
Answer: A filter’s micron rating refers to the smallest size contaminant the filter media can remove; however, there is no correlation between micron rating and a filter’s efficiency percentage.

The beta ratio test measures a filter’s efficiency for removing particles of a certain size by comparing the amount of contaminant particles before and after filtration. The number of particles after filtration is divided by the number before filtration. The resulting number is the beta ratio. AMSOIL Ea filters have a minimum beta ratio of 75, meaning they are capable of removing 98.7% of contaminant particles of a stated size.

Hope that helps

I think the beta ratio must be the number of particles before filtration divided by the number after?
If you start with 1000 particles and 987 are filtered out, then 1000/(1000-987) = 1000/13 = 76.9 ~= 75.

Actually, you get closer to 75 if you divide the number of filtered particles by unfiltered, 75.9...but, poking around the web indicates that the former formula is the correct one.

600 grit sandpaper is appx. 15 micron particle roughness. Rub that around on things and it makes scratches, and that's what it does inside an engine. Of course "particles" may be soft not hard and do nothing harmful.

Hey thanks guys I have learned so much from you guys since I found and joined this site like a week ago. You are all very helpful!
