Ancestry DNA Kit

I have done quite a bit of genealogy research over the years. And have traced my German Ancestry back to one generation before they came over in 1752.

They are quite good they analyse 700,000 "markers" On the DNA chain. They are getting better all the time and as they have built up their data base its now (IMHO) worth doing. I have watched this development of years. And I think its now pretty good.

Anyone else done it?

I've never been interested in ancestry because it doesn't make who was what in the past. The DNA might give some insight into susceptibility to future maladies

Even though I know all 4 of my grandparents came from similar geography, I'd be curious to what the DNA test shows.

I did it and am awaiting results. For me, it is well worth the meager fee.

In the mean time they give you some family tree info that I found interesting. My mothers side of the family has always been sort of shrouded in mystery. She passed away way back and took any family history with her. So for me, this kind of stuff is something I wanted to explore. I am especially curious as to my ethnic background and my suspicions.

People PAY MONEY to get added to a DNA database!!?? A DNA database that the police/FBI/authorities will eventually access if they haven't already.

Yes my friend, some people, as difficult as it is for you to fathom....do find the details of genetic testing and it's conclusions to be interesting. Some people, like me, find the historical context of ones family tree to be at least as interesting as a bottle of motor oil.

And what significance does it make if the FBI has access to it or not?? So should I get arrested with a federal crime first and then politely ask them to do a DNA background check for me? You make zero sense.

Oh...and the phrase is..."I couldn't care less".

Agreed..to each his own. I find it very interesting also. I loled at someone paying 100 bucks to send in dog slobber.

Very few, it turns out. It's very easy to track these things, even over many generations, because of how the Y chromosome is passed down.

To the vast majority of people, learning about your ancestry is a lot more exciting than learning about or arguing about oil filters or sending used oil off for analysis.

What's the point of the DNA test? It isn't capable of telling you anything that actual genealogical work can't. It sounds like a way for skinheads to do a UOA on their spit so they can have a piece of paper that says they're white. It's well-known that each different service will give you different results due to sampling error.

No it doesn't suffice for genealogy. It can, when linked with Ancestry.com locate additional members of your family tree. You sign an agreement for this benefit. So it really can be an aid to genealogy research.

Like I said..its not for everyone. Some are interested in cars, cameras, firearms, music, motorcycles, sience, cosmology, history.

Lots of reasons for. My particular reason is that my family tree is missing an awful lot of branches. It would also be interesting to know what the various ethnic relations I am part of.

It's odd to me why anybody doesn't at least find that type of thing somewhat interesting. Oh well...everybody is different.

That thought has occured to me many times about many topics. People don't care to gain a very very basic understanding of how a car works, how a computer works, how the economy works, how elections works, and I'm confused by the apathy. Genealogy is just in my "apathetic" column.
