Just want to share a few findings with regards to AmsOil Universal in Honda/Acura 5sp AT.
First of all I had acquired the car with 96,000km on the clock (~60,000mi) right away I drained the ATF and refilled with Z-1 then few days after I had drained it again. After this I did not notice any change in shifts; it still had a very noticeable "soft hammer" during 2-3 upshift and then under heavy accel from 4-5.
8,000km later I did another drain refill with Z-1 still no changes, maybe just maybe a bit softer 2-3 upshift.
Few thousand km laterI did 4th drain/refill with Z-1 again, and again not much of a change
Then at 119,000km I decided to drain and refill with AMSOIL universal, at that time I only noticed no deterioration in shifts 6,000km later I did another drain/refil with AMSOil, it was not untill few months later that I noticed a positive change in 2-3 upshift as well as a much better response 4-5 when I mushed it I even missed my exit to check the shifts under heavy accel slowing down to 60km/h and the flooring it untill I hit 140km/h .
My findings:
much smoother ****s under all conditions very rarrely do I get an upshift that resembles the upshift with Z-1. Overall very pleased with AMS product and I really did not like their stuff.
Ok a bit long winded but I can't help it hope this may kinda help a bit.

P.s.
I still have 3 bottles of Z-1 and plan to use it straight or mix

That's the classic sign of impending linear solenoid failure on the 5-speed autos.

You should have taken the vehicle straight to the dealer as the transmission is under extended warranty until 109k miles.

Even if not the original owner?

The extended warranty on the transmission follows the vehicle, not the owner.

Extension is the same for Canada, I just checked.

Critic, this makes sense similar thing used to happen on Chrysler transmissions. But forgot to mension I had the vechicle in for ATF service and complained about it (that was the last Z-1 refill) and ofcourse they said it was fine and typical and all that.... If I go in and point out then knowing these people it'll only get me a few snears

Fill it up again with Z1 and see what happens. When the linear solenoid begins to fail, you'll get a very strong jerk on the 2-3 shift.

do the hondas have the same warranty on their transmissions? my dads 1999 accord v6 auto shifts pretty hard when really getting on the gas. granted its time to change the atf but still. can anyone enlighten me on this?

Some of the 6th gen were covered officially under the 7/100k extension. However, even if it wasn't covered, Honda was known to goodwill a good portion of the repair as the B7 series auto in that generation was extremely unreliable.

The Critic is correct. And I too am one of the thousands to have transmission failure in a Honda/Acura product and have it replaced under the warranty extension. I purchased my '99 3.2 TL used at 60K miles and the trans started slipping badly at 78K. Acura covered the replacement trans (parts + labor + rental). Knock on wood, this new trans is good but I am paranoid about fluid changes. I'm a fan of the Amsoil products but this car only gets Z1 every 20K miles at the Acura dealer. I fear if this trans fails and I have a non-approved fluid in there, Acura would most certainly deny another warranty claim.

You can read more than you ever wanted to on The Acurazine discussion board.

Trans FAQ here: http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113297

and main trans failure thread with nearly 1,500! posts here: http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106818&page=58&pp=25

This problem is extremely well-documented and there are many folks out there on their 3rd and 4th trans.

Chris
