This is by far not my first UOA, but it is my first posting here on BITOG. The vehicle in question is my 2004 Mercury Sable LS with the 3.0 DOHC Duratec engine. I was running an OEM air filter, and an AmsOil EaO11 oil filter. The car had approx. 78000 miles on it when I pulled this sample. The oil was in service for 6 months/~20,000 miles. I was driving 26 highwy miles one-way to work every day, and driving a minimum of 500 highway miles per weekend to visit the fiance. I do regret not paying extra for the TBN. The first number is my result, the second for Blackstone's universal average for this motor at 4800 miles.

Aluminum 5 3
Chromium 2 1
Iron 43 17
Copper 5 5
Lead 0 1
Tin 0 0
Molybdenum 11 44
Nickel 1 0
Manganese 1 1
Silver 0 0
Titanium 0 0
Potassium 2 1
Boron 12 80
Silicon 22 13
Sodium 9 5
Calcium 2812 2181
Magnesium 9 94
Phosphorus 569 702
Zinc 636 834
Barium 0 0

SUS Viscosity @ 210 deg. 64.8
Flashpoint 425 deg. F
Fuel Antifreeze 0%
Water 0%
Insolubles 0.3

It thickened out of grade slightly, as expected from this oil although not as badly as I had anticipated.

I have relocated closer to the fiance, and have taken different employment as a result. I now only log 5 or 6 miles stop-and-go one way to work each day, so I will obviously be shortening my OCI in the future. The current oil is 5W-20 Motorcraft with Motorcraft filter, and I plan to run 6 mo./5000 mile OCIs.

Forgive my ignorance. Do you have a bypass filter? But in any event..great results. Fuel, flash, and viscosity are great. It would be interesting to see tbn. But how bad can it be with these numbers. I agree with santo

Blackstone listed the SUS Viscosity range at 210 degrees Fahrenheit as being 56 to 64, which puts me as .8 out of spec according to them. They list an option for cST viscosity, but did not give a spec for it. Either way, I'm not terribly worried about it at all, though. I'm pleased with the results. If my driving habits had not changed, I would have my "sweet" oil picked out. With a magnet on the drain plug or epoxied on the oil filter, I would have pushed it further next time. But, alas, I get to do the terrible start/stop city traffic B.S. now . . .

Great results! You couldn't ask for better. You've found a good match for your engine. Any chance you'll try another brand to compare? (hint hint Mobil 1 EP)

In all honesty, I probably wouldn't change a thing.

With the money that you save in fuel ...you can afford a whole new car in a year or two.

Never mind. You're getting married. Scratch that.

No, no. I actually am a pickup man at heart, and found a sweet deal on a 05 Chevy Colorado (first chevy for a Ford man ...), so I made the trade and hope to post some good UOAs here for that. I am a believer in the GM OLMs, and plan to do UOAs on whatever oil I choose based on that.

As I mentioned before, this is not my first UOA. As I find old reports on vehicles, I will post them here for everybody's enjoyment/chagrine/whatever your individual situation/beliefs may be. Most are very long OCI's with synthetics . . . most even longer than this one.

The SUS range that Blackstones cites, ie 56-64 SUS, is the typical viscosity range most xw-30's fall into when blended. It's not the upper limit of the SAE 30wt range....

This is an exceptionally stable viscosity for any oil after 20k without a bypass filter. The latest versions of this formulation run about 10.5 Cst right out of the bottle for comparison. I think some credit has to go to the Eao oil filter for the very low solids level of 0.3% after this many miles.

Yes this is the SM additive package - note the low level of ZnDTP.

Well, I bought this oil back in November or December and I thought that they didn't go to SM until mid to late spring. I dunno. I wish I still had one of the bottles to double check now that you have me curious.

I feel a lot better about the viscosity now. The EaO filter seem to be alot heavier than the old SDF filters, which tells me that the EaO filters are better filters, just based on feel.

Amsoil uses up all their old oil bottle labels before they start using the new ones. So the best way to tell when a formulation has been changes is to look at the latest MSDS, ie Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet. The MSDS for the S2000 changed in June 22, 2005.

The 0w-30/5w30/10w-30 are all API/SM, ACEA A5/B5 and VW 503.00 spec stuff..The 0w30 in particular is:

Vis @ 100C, 10.5 Cst
Vis @ 40C, 54 Cst
VI of 187
High Temp/High Shear of 3.3 Cp @ 150C.

The latest SM Amsoil UOA's have been excellent so far. Much less thickening than before, however we need to see more reports to confirm.

CT,

Yes, that's why it still has the old labels....However if you go on their website and click on products, you can see the current specs for the 5w30.

The thickening out of grade rap was always overblown, since the 5w30/10w-30 used to be borderline 30wt/40wt oils to begin with, ie formulated in the 11.5-12.0 Cst range.
