Amsoil MCF/MCV Gear Tests

I think amsoil is most likly testing their protucts more then any other company. They have make sure they can meet that 25k drain statment.
As for MCV, I've used it my harley and was happy on all counts, fuel mileage was great. But I currently use dino oil at 3k cahnges because its hard for me to spend the initial lump sum to use amsoil.

I don't believe the FZG ASTM-5182 is relevant to motorcycle transmissions; I doubt there are contact pressures of 289,000 psi (stage 13) on the gear faces of these transmissions. I am curious to know if even stage 1 contact pressures (21,178 psi) are generated in motorcycle transmissions; it is possible to perform a rough calculation. Motorcycles aren't load bearing machines like a crane, bulldozer, dump truck, etc...

Okay, I calculated the gear contact pressurebased on the following assumptions,

Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 3.6 sec (greatest force occurs from standstill to about 60 mph)
Mass: 700 lbs (bike + 200 lb rider)
Gear face area: 1 sq inch

The pressure experienced at the gear face (assuming this gear face bears the entire load singularly) is 17,500 psi; well below stage 1 of FZG ASTM-5182.

Having said that, I don't know too much about how motorcycle transmission are designed/manufactured but I am sure they are engineered to handle almost anything within the realm of its intended purpose.

A few years ago, Amsoil claimed their 5W-40 European oil met a non-existent Daimler specification. They just copied and pasted a few of the other specs and somehow added one in-between that was non-existent.

Actually as I recall that was a typographical error.

Amsoil has been on the MB list from time to time, when they submit. But they have not done that for some years.

Hey Ethan,

I don't have any test numbers to back up what I'm saying, but I've been using Amsoil 10-40 Moto oil in my '84 FJ1100 for the past 56K miles (purchased it four years ago with 29K on it) and I have nothing but good things to say about it. These bikes were known for their 2nd gear issues (at least the early ones like mine were) and I'm going strong at 85.5K miles as of this past weekend. Original everything. I'm doing 4.5-5K OCIs with about a half quart make up. It's good stuff.
