Just about to install this filter, but saw this on the inside. It’s not (currently) liquid, but used to be best I can tell. Is this normal/ok? @Pablo and others please chime in. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick replies. I pulled another from my stash from the same order. It apparently also has the glue.

Is this ok to use? I’m surprised given the brand clout.

Contact AMSOIL, they will send you replacements, like they did for me.

I haven't bought any more EaO's however, as I managed to get a good number of FRAM Titaniums and Ultra's (OG) before the synthetic media versions vanished (former member Rod Knock graciously donated the Titanium filters, we don't have them in Canada).

If the QC issues with the consumer brands are still playing out by the time I have to actually buy filters again, I'll probably just go Fleetguard, though I know that's not an option for most passenger car applications.

Thanks for the replies. I paid a little more thinking I wouldn't have to worry about manufacturing defects, etc. This is ridiculous.

I don't want to unwind this thread, but is there a "Donaldson media" filter that would work for my application? Think their "syntech (blue)" filters vs cellulose. I thought Amsoil used it, but apparently their manufacturing is not great. Thanks again.

The AMSOIL filters no longer use the Donaldson media, that changed a while back. I covered it in a thread at one point, you should be able to find it with the search function.

While Donaldson DOES make some PCMO filters using their Synteq media, the applications are extremely limited. Fleetguard also makes some synthetic media filters, with a few more applications than Donaldson, but again, not a huge coverage because their primary market is HD applications.

If you just want a synthetic media cartridge filter that you can inspect before purchase, I'd just go with the FRAM Endurance, which is less money than the EaO and filters just as well, with the benefit that you know what it looks like before buying it.

Just for the record, Amsoil doesn't make filters. They really don't even control the contract manufacturer.

I'm not surprised and it's not ridiculous when you look at the junk being made by many or really almost all filter manufacturers. I have expressed my discontent in several ways, through direct complaints, by requesting Amsoil get out of the PCMO full flow filter business and certainly by not pushing or even recommending Amsoil branded full flow filters. This does not mean or imply that Amsoil filters are worse than other filters, just the bar has been lowered so much, why drag the name down.

I would also recommend you not go with a Donaldson media filter in any application where/when Amsoil calls out a "15K series" filter. These become restrictive in use in some engines.

Thanks for the insightful reply. Looks like Amsoil should revisit this. Who makes the “best” filter for this application now?

Plenty of threads on that. Find one closest to OEM, get them from the dealer.

You should know, I am solidly of the thought group: As long as you use a filter that is close to OEM, your engine will NOT wear out because of the oil filter choice. Not even close.

Unfortunately the fram Endurance also has the same potting glue issue, the two that I got from Walmart have it in the outside which I am ok with but seems like you can't get away from basic QC these days.

@Pablo @thescreensavers @OVERKILL

Looks like I should just smile and nod and go with the regular OEM filter? With the cellulose media.

The TRD (yes, turd) filter media looked great, but they don’t sell them anymore.
I installed the Endurance on my GX since the potting was on the outside. Id just email Amsoil to swap your filter out.

Yes, I expected that, since I believe both are made the same now, but at least with the FRAM, you can pre-inspect and try to avoid ones that are covered in potting material.

You'd think if Amsoil got enough complaints on the level of quality that they would hammer down on whoever is making those filters for them. That's how it should work. No company should let their supplier drag them down. Put the hammer down or fire them and find a new supplier that can do the job right.
