Amsoil 10W-30 Small Engine Oil

Just curious if anyone has any opinions or experience running "Amsoil Formula 4-Stroke® 10w30/SAE 30 Synthetic Small Engine Oil (ASE)" in their motorcycles.

I got to thinking about this because the Honda lineup is now specifying a 10w30 grade for 2007 models and higher. The regular Amsoil MCF is a 10W-40.

(I know the 10W-40 will work okay)

I sent an e-mail to Amsoil and they recommended the HDD 5w30 as the oil to use for motorcycles when the specification is 10w30. I looked and that oil is not JASO MA. It's JASO DH-1 ... whatever exactly that means.

But the 10w30 Small Engine Oil is JASO MA. So I'm left to wonder why the Asmoil rep responded with HDD 5w30 when there's a 10w30 that's JASO MA?

Maybe. But I find it somewhat odd. When the discussion is "Rotella vs. Amsoil," the lack of JASO MA for Rotella is one of the main arguments offered against Rotella by the Amsoil advocates. Now here's a case where the question is between two different Amsoil oils, and the recommendation is for a Heavy Duty Diesel that's not JASO MA. I mentioned in my e-mail that the application was a motorcycle with a wet clutch.

It could be that the HDD 5w30 has a better anti-wear and anti-shear additive pack. In that case perhaps it is better suited for the task. But if so, then it suggests that a quality HDEO trumps JASO MA.

Anyway, the question was really whether anyone has any experience with the 10w30 small engine oil. Based on the description of the stuff, it's designed for things like pumps and generators -- things that might not get quite the tender loving maintenance of cars or trucks.
 
I have great luck with the Ams small engine oil, my freind uses it in his mustang over the 5w30 ASL and I use it in all the small engines I have, 2 years ago I changed the oil in my buddies genset for hurrican Katrina and he swore to me his genset ran an additional 1 and a half hour longer after the oil changed,

havn't used it in a motorcycle yet, I see it is CF rated too, looks like it will do diesel too

Really? How current is that CF spec?

Perhaps the real AMS reps could enlighten us on AMS recomendations.

small engine oil is not hard to get if you just ask the site sponsors

It's possible, I used to run my lawnmower out of gas when I cut my neighbors grass; I was using Mystik SAE 30 too. I put in Amsoil XL 5w30 and never ran the tank dry. I cleaned the air filter and it would then use a little more than half a tank of gas. I put in Amsoil 0w-40 and never used more than half a tank of gas. All of these are based on the same grass cutting conditions.
 
Laz, I only need 2 quarts per year presently. So it does not pay to buy alot in my neck of the woods. Have found that Ams #aff 0w40 to be working very good for me in this bike. And I can get it close by. The 10w30 may push the upper limit of 86f cause it is another hot summer here. But I would not be afraid to use it otherwise.

Don't really know. I suspect for the fuel economy and the emissions ... perhaps they're preparing for when the standards get tighter.

Honda's owners manual allows the use of 10W-40 for higher temperatures. The chart is intentionally imprecise. It shows 10W-40 usage around 80*F and above.

Yeah ... 10W40 would work perfectly well. I've run with the Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle oil before. It's great oil, no doubt about that.

Come winter the temperatures in Tucson can get down to the 30's at night and up to the 70's in the daytime. In that time frame I'd like to try a 10w30 just to see if there's any real difference in the way the bike operates. Some say there's a noticeable difference. I'd like to see for myself.

Honda sells a synthetic 10w30 now. Rumor is it's made by Mobil. I don't know the numbers on the oil ... zddp, etc. I'm sure it's decent oil. I know it's expensive: $9+ per quart.

A more year-round oil for me might be a good 5W-40 synthetic.
 
10W-40 will be fine year round, I have ran my bike from 14 (yes fourteen) degrees F to over 100* F with 10W-40 & that was using golden spectro. Ride home that night wasn't a lot of fun as I had to ride with the face shield up because it frosted on the inside. About any Amsoil should be a lot better oil than what I was running back then.
 
Honda oils are not blended by Mobil; I wish I could remember who does it, but I was told who long before I cared about oil much, and before I found this site.
I was using(still am) Mobil 1 at the time so I wasn't that interested.
