95% of the miles are towing my 8000lb 5th wheel, and/or our 4-horse trailer. I put 6k miles on the oil in 4 months, and i also replaced the oem filter twice during this OCI.

I don't know how to post the actual report, but i'll list the metals individually.
OAI did the report.

Data flagged for observation only; Total Base Number is MODERATELY LOW.

*********Wear metals ppm*
IRON--11
CHROMIUM--0
NICKEL--1
ALUMINUM--4
COPPER--8---This could be due to the oil cooler.??
LEAD--0
TIN--0
CADMIUM--0
SILVER--0
TITANIUM--0
VANADIUM--0

*********Contaminant metals--ppm**
SILICON--11------This is high due to use of oiled TRD filter.
SODIUM--5
POTASSIUM--1

*********Multi source metals ppm**
MOLYBDENUM--5
ANTIMONY--0
MANGANESE--0
LITHIUM--0
BORON--6

********Additive metals ppm*
MAGNESIUM--12
CALCIUM--2992
BARIUM--1
PHOSPHOROUS--593
ZINC--707

DATE sampled--8/22/08
Date received--9/18/08---USPS took too long.
Unit time--4 months
Lube time--6k miles
Lube change--no
Filter change--no
FUEL--less than .5%
SOOT--less than .1%
WATER--less than .1%
VIS @ 100.C--9.1
TAN---not listed
TBN--3.72--------This oil is 75% used up at 6k miles.??
I-R OXIDA--35
I-R NITRA--18

My total miles on the truck are 15k.

I am dissapointed in the UOA after using such a high end oil. However, the truck is still breaking in and it is used hard 95% of the time. I just replaced this oil and filter using ASL 5w30 and oem filter, even though toyota recomends a 0w20 or 5w/20 for this motor. We'll see how this run of the 30w goes. I'm hoping for better results next time.

I would appreciate everyones input on this, as i don't know much about how to read these reports.

Thanks

Considering all the towing and the new engine it looks pretty good - lose the rock catcher air filter and the Fe, Al and Ni should go down. I think if you can get 10k out of the oil that would be excellent.

It may be worth considering upgrading to the Amsoil 0w-30/SSO due to how hard you work this truck. It should last about 20% longer than the regular 5w-30.

For all of that HARD driving, the oil held up well! The TBN doesn't run on a linear line.

See if you can get an Amsoil EAA air filter. I run one and recommend it.

First of all the oil has about 5-7+ ppm Si native. 11 is nothing.

What lab did you use? I suspect OAI. Perhaps a TBN of 3.72 seems low, but it does not mean the oil is 75% used up. As stated it's not linear.

Now my comments: This is a fairly excellent UOA in a good sized engine doing some big work. It's a shame you changed oil viscosity already. This UOC started with under 10K total on the truck and a second run of the same oil looked to be stellar.

That's a great report, IMHO. The wear looks nice and low, cSt 100F is spot on for spec. (9.1 vs. 9.0). As others noted the TBN is not linear with time. I would guess this oil is good for at least 10K in your truck.

Rumple

I agree with Pablo. Your engine is breaking in nicely and the ASM was still in great shape. A TAN would have been nice to have though. If this was your first fill of ASM, I think you jumped the gun on switching oils. You really need to wait until after a couple of fills of an oil to tell how long you can run it in your engine. Your first fill will be a mix of your previous oil and your new oil. The next fill will be more complete and will allow the AW additives to start working better. As mentioned previously, the TBN is not a linear loss due to mileage. It very easily could have tested higher on your next UOA too.

Oil performed pretty well. Good move to go back to oem air filter. Try a mobil 1 oil filter and run 8k with no intermediate filter change.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that report. If Amsoil makes the EaO and EaA filters for this truck, I highly recommend you use them. They are great filters. Best move Amsoil has made concerning filters, hooking up with Donaldson.

Just for reference the limits on oxidation & nitration are 50 abs/cm on each. In order to fully evaluate the oil you have to look at those, along with the change in viscosity, the # of fuel and silica/alumina (dirt) and finally the TBN. The signature you have here, with twice as much oxidation as nitration, indicates you've burned a lot of fuel despite the fairly short OCI.

It can take 20k miles for the wear pattern to stabilize, so the ASL may work even better, but it won't be a fair comparison.

From the metal numbers ..there's nothing wrong with this report. It's noise.

I too would have used this oil again. There's nothing to fret about here and would use it for 6months with numbers like these for the next UOA. No doubt in my mind.

This is a Toyota. It really doesn't matter what oil you use.

Oil held up fine.

This is how long you can expect the Amsoil 5w-30 to last under these conditions (I've guessed at your average mpg, based on the EPA estimates)

OCI(max) = (C*)(ave mpg)(sump-qts)(Ci/Hp)
= (125)(15.0)(8.0)(346/381)

OCI(max) = 13,622 miles

The difference between you and the guy from Huntsville with the same truck:

1) no heavy towing
2) no mountain driving (No - Monte Santo doesn't count as a real Mt)

My tiny EAO20 holds .5 quart, figure 2 changes would be 1 quart. That tundra must have 1 small filter. My 93 F150 holds close to 1 quart just in the filter.

The cartridge can holds about .40 qts by calculating using the WIX dimensions....the volume by the size of the media is about .3 qts. This is rough measurement, I will admit. Most people tend to overstate how much their filters hold, IMHO. (not saying you are) How did you arrive at .5 for the EaO20?

I think that anyone who calculates the physical dimensions will surely conclude that there's rarely a "one quart filter" in use ..even the big ones.

What they probably base that on is the added losses when removing the filter. This depends much on a holding ADBV and the amount of forward cached oil that can't drain forward.

They change a 1/2 quart filter ..but end up adding a quart. Most cartridge setups lose no oil in the changing. Some spin-on's too.

Gary the cartridge on my MZR engine loses a lot of oil since it faces down it drains all of the oil and the filter is tiny. The only real way to know how much oil you lose during just a filter change is to measure the amount you need to add after the fact.

I think you're in great shape, especially consider your heavy towing! While your UOA is every so slightly worse than mine with the ASM 0W-20, it's well within lab error, never mind lab to lab error.

For sure, the ASM 0W-20 protected your engine admirably! To me, its absolutely fantastic that you got such good numbers while towing, never mind so close to mine with zero towing!

Anyone want to claim that 0W-20 doesn't protect well?

It's the closest thing we've got!

It's pretty, but a mountain it's not. But then again, neither are the Appalachians! (I grew up in SW Connecticut and spent summers camping in New York State.)
