ammo shopping problems

Its probably just a good business decision. Have you ever seen the price tag on insurance policies for stores that sell ammo? Have you ever seen the rules and requirements attached to a ammunition rider? Its probably not very cost effective to pay additional $$$ and jump through hoops in order to carry huge ammounts of ammunition if its not a huge part of your sales.

Got a killer deal on sportsmans guide over presidents day weekend! They were offering free shipping on orders at least $99. That's really easy to do with ammo so I got a good sized shopping cart going. Hope you guys caught that special!

First time not ordering from CTD and Im pretty happy with it. CTD's shipping charges is insane! For an ammo tin they want $33 shipping! I got a large bulk order from sportsmans guide and they wanted $25 and I got that for free [censored] it!

One thing for sure, prices are going up.

Now that I’m buying .45 regularly (and stocking up) something strikes me a bit odd. There sure isn’t much of a discount for buying bulk with the “larger” (more well known?) brands . Seriously go to Cabelas, Sportsman’s guide, MidwayUSA, Natchez, Ammunitiontogo, takeyourchoiceammo.com and compare 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 quantities of 45 ACP in the known (and other) brands. Maybe it’s just me, but I expect more of a per round difference.

Natchez Shooters Supply and Sportsmans Guide have better prices.

As for ammo getting expensive, I bought a 550 box of Remington .22s for $19 + tax from Wal-Mart. The same box 6 years ago cost $8. Lead and brass are precious metals.

Ya so syphon it off somewhere else and keep ammo prices down! Ive got a box of those Remington .22's and Ive got a bunch of duds in that box. Id have at least 2 per 10rd mag. Just [censored]!

90% of the .22 ammunition I have stored consists of Federal. I bought a Taurus 94 revolver and I am going to try a variety of brands in it.

You mean the serious gun owners who'd rather go to the local Gun store that charges more than double for the same box of ammo? :| I buy pretty much all of my target/plinking ammo from Wal-Mart. I've yet to find better pricing on BRASS cased factory new ammuntion. ATG, and similiar is where I buy all of my SD ammo, and on occassion they have deals on FMJ's that are close to Wal-Mart's in regards to pistol ammo. Now if I needed a 60 yr old box of ammo for some speciality caliber I might go to the local gun store, but I stay far away from those con-men.

Totally agree. These days I only order online when its something I have a hard time getting local, like 9x18. I have yet to find a better price on ammo that isnt Walmart. After you order up your cheap ammo and pay shipping youve paid more than at walmart.

????

I guess me and a my shooting buddies are not "Serious gun owners"? The bulk pack of good UMC 9mm, .40 and .45 simply are tough to beat. I am actually excited they are building a Walmart in Monroe, WA, about 10 miles away!! WOOT!!!!

Take it easy guys, it's only my opinion. I'm looking less at cost than other issues, like whether they stock specific defense rounds, wanting to purchase by the case without an advance order, waiting behind time-hogging customers, etc. Yes, I would also rather order online than deal with most gun shops.

I bought a batch of Cor-Bon from The Armory, the purchase was easy and it arrived packaged well. It was on sale.

Its difficult for me to justify buying elsewhere as I have a Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shops about 45 minutes away, and a Cabelas within 5 minutes of me.

I must say, they have some very good prices. Worth joining, plus they always have $10 off coupons and such. Everything I ordered from them came pronto.

NICE prices on FMJ 158gr 38 special at Sportsman's Guide.

Two thumbs up - don't be fooled by their cheezy catalogs and imitation boat dock wear and fake chairs and junk.

Looking at 9mm rounds; (in today's prices)

6.2 cents per bullet
2.7 cents per primer
1.0 cents powder
9.9 cents per round.

$4.95 per 50 rounds. The 850 rounds in this photo would cost me $84.15 (again today's prices which have gone CRAZY in the last 2.5 years) in materials and about 3 hours of enjoyable time.

If I did not reload I would doubt I'd shoot. I enjoy the reloading almost as much as shooting. Since I've moved and have a dedicated room its nice to have a bench setup for reloading alone.

Take care, bill

Check out the Lee Anniversary kit that Midway USA sells. It goes on sale every year and you can pick it up for less than $100. It has everything you need to reload except for the specific caliber dies ($20-$30) and a set of inexpensive calipers ($5-$10) for measuring overall length. A vibratory brass tumbler is also pretty useful. Cabela's sells a tumbler kit for around $60 that comes with everything you need for brass cleaning. So... for under $200 you can be equiped with nice new tools for reloading!

If you don't enjoy reloading as a hobby, however, it is certainly not economical to reload as it takes a significant amount of your valuable time. I wouldn't recommend reloading if you are ONLY doing it for the economy.
