Usually, I dont think that Im lazy. However today I feel like it and am here posting messages instead of doing work that I need to do.

Specifically, I need to finish mowing the lawn.

Ive decided that I refuse to Mow when its 100 degrees outside and this morning started out at 91 and we are currently about at 100.

I mowed the front and sides working a few minutes each day and the back yard is kind of my business as it shouldnt bother the neighbors too much.

I want to get it done and I feel lazy sitting here typing this and yet I know that Im not going to do it. Im waiting for a day when the temp tops out at say 90 and I can mow in the morning when its only 75-80.

I never thought I was lazy but here I am typing instead of working. If my neighbors lynch me then you will know why.

Isn't it somewhere in a 'mower etiquette (sp?)' book that it is perfectly acceptable to not mow in temps above 80°F/25°C?

FWIW, the GF is always nagging me about mowing the lawn. I always tell her to at least give it a chance to grow before I cut it again.

Id sort of like to rent a goat for the summer. I have a large lawn and a next door neighbor thats a bit picky. He got mad because I wouldnt sell a strip of land to him and hes been a bit difficult ever since that time.

Neighbor on other side mows 5 feet (2 swaths) to my side every time he mows and I mow 5 feet to his side when I mow.

Neighbor on the other side *ahem* makes things difficult and he really wants me to sell him some land. He wants the land badly. He wont repair his fence and lets it rot and he seems like hes planning to get it.

I practically have to mow his lawn for him all the way to his fence or it wont get mowed at all. The funny thing is that he complains if I dont do it.

There is supposed to be a buffer area between where you can build a fence and where your land ends and his area ends at his fence and not an inch beyond and yet he is difficult about my dedication to mowing this part of the property. Its rocky, with a slope, and must be done with a push mower so its probably the hardest part of the experience.

Right now everything is mowed except for a patch in the back and I should do it but its hot.

Id love to see a mower etiquette book. When is it ok to not mow? What should be done to keep neighbors happy? How tall is too tall?

Ive been busy and though I really like most of my neighbors they dont write the checks to pay my bills so there are just times when I have other responsibilities.

Last year, I hired an eager beaver kid to do it and he took the money and ran after doing 1/3rd of the job. I ended up doing it anyway. He had this great Honda Mower and I thought hed be able to get it done in 3-4 hours without a problem. 45 minutes and he was gone. Im loyal to Murray but my family is from Tn and has business in Lawrenceburg. Murray is an ok mower. I know because I have 3 of them and always am working on repairing one or two. HeHeHe

Bugshu, Murray is bankrupt and pretty much history. Since Briggs & Stratton was the biggest looser, they took over in hopes of recovering something, but who knows. Major job loss for us. The Tecumseh engine on my Murray was made here. Tecumseh probably really took a bath.

Not much reason to be loyal anymore. Murray is a casualty.

due to the rain, vacation and general laziness, my backyard got a bit tall recently. How tall? well, it was taller than the dog...(ok, it's a Basset Hound, but still...)

seriously it was taller than the mower. Had to bag it, got 14 bags of very wet and very heavy clippings from just the one yard on the tallest cut setting, too (yard may be 5k sqft?). Mulch it? hah!

It looks awful now, all yellowed from lack of sun, and as flat as a washboard, but we'll do it again early next week and all will be back to normal.....the joys of home ownership.

Bugshu - I'll get a little philosphical here and say that there is a "natural" time for everything, and in the case of the lawn that would be when there is less than 90 degrees and 80% humidity. At least if you want to avoid heatstroke. (As a fellow Texan I claim for myself a little credibility on the issue)

.

My natural time philosphy extends to not working on cars when I am beat, or when my mind is on something else. I learned this policy through a few busted knuckles and botched jobs. I do my best to have my energy and attention up to par, but when it isn't, I recognize the limitations.

The desirability and social acceptance of green, mowed, monoculture lawns has been fabricated by the lawn care industry, from Chem lawn to LawnBoy. I'm convinced this is on the scale of DeBeer's duping of women around the world with that 'Diamonds are Forever' BS.

Fight the Power! Your neighbours are brainwashed stooges of the lawncare industry. Go ride a bike, take a walk, change the oil, write or read a book, have a beer!!

Don't mow it! When I was a kid my family had a 4 acre yard. My dad bought the place and fenced off 1 acre for our actual yard. The rest he let run wild with weeds, sunflowers etc... We had snotty neighbors- basically transplanted city folks on both sides. They would make comments to dad about it which really didn't bother my dad in the slightest. He was very comfortable with himself. Dad finally answered up one day to Mr. Rich Britches. Dad said, if you keep it up I can always get ahold of Department of Wildlife and Parks with the State and get the yard designated as a Wildlife Preserve! Now that shut the neighbors up and we never heard about the subject again.

My neighbor's yard.

He gets points for also having a junk truck he hasn't worked on in several years.

He mowed maybe three times last summer. The town mowed the road right-of-way back around ten feet. The neighbor must have done the path by the swingset.

He should let his grandkids have the mower (a real blue smoke belching clattering heap) and tell them to make crop circles, a maze, anything!

I'm with Griz. It's ridiculous the amount of time and resources get put into lawns in this country. The amount of chemicals put into lawns each year rivals what goes into agriculture.
Cut it when you feel like it. Grow dandelions.
Unfortunately these days, your neighbors can hassle you.

I admit I cut my grass up to 3 times a week.I like my place to have a certain look and tall uneven grass looks very unsightly to me.

Plus mowing the lawn gives me an excuse to drink a few ice cold Smirnoff Ice's.

I don't water my lawn, it just makes it grow faster. June was nice, less than 2" of rain, almost 6 weeks on only 1 mow. It has rained for the past week or so so I need to mow again in a few days and just did it 2 days ago.

Weeds!!!!! 90% weeds and I love it!!!!!

They are short weeds, never growing over a couple inches high. There's only about 5 minutes of actual mowing to do to bring the small amount of grass to the height of the weeds.

One neighbor used to moan and complain. Then his shrew of a wife griped to me one day. Told her of my visit to Korea and how I admired their culture. "Why?," she uttered. Because her husband would beat her if she was disrespectful to a male!!! She doesn't say a word to me anymore..... just glares. Hee hee.

After a couple years of off-and-on whining the neighbor ceased and his woman quit staring. Wondered about the sudden cessation then it dawned on me...... coincided with my obtaining a speed bag to get some exercise and stay prepared.... just in case.

Used to pound on the bag regularly, for several years. I can make that baby sing. Not like the pros but to the average Joe who sees me comments are made as to my ability and am asked if I ever fought in the ring.

Didn't get the bag to intimidate the weeny whiney neighbors but it seems to have had that affect!!!!

And the weeds look great!!!!!
