My son, 18, always feels tired. He says he sleeps but always wakes up tired. He has had blood work done and only deficient in Vitamin D, and we're waiting for his sleep study results. He is weak in strength, too. He's not obese,he's about 5'9" 160lbs . Anyone familiar with this condition. We are still trying to find out what else we can do. Thanks

Is he physically active?

Young coworker had sleep apnea; using the cpap made a big difference. He was also not overweight. See how the sleep study results turn out.

Vitamin D is needed to take your iron stores from your bone marrow to your bloodstream. Been having that problem for years. His iron stores are probley high but not getting to his bloodstream . take him to a specialist in that field.

I have more energy today than I had at 18. But keep in mind that I say energy, not strength.
A lot of mine was laziness, staying up too late, girlfriends:p and maybe lack of enthusiasm.

I too wake up tired but at the same time I feel rested. There's a difference!
Once I get up and moving around and with that first cup of coffee, my outlook change and I have an agenda for the day and my life.

There may be more wrong with your son that is medical related but you're not going to find it here.
I'm praying for him. 🙏

Sleep study is a really good idea. Sleep apnea causes more than just tiredness. Long term it leads to pulmonary hypertension which is BAD.

That and wait and see how he does as he gets his vitamin d levels up. I'd want K2 with the vitamin D.

If there is depression present , seek professional help. Low vitamin d can affect mentation.

Sounds like me but I'm 43. One thing I've noticed is it's better if I drink water before bed, yeah have to get up at least once but it's better. Even better than water is Michelob Ultra. Not sure why but I wake up feeling great and usually don't have to get up in the middle of the night. I'm in pretty good shape and all my test results even a sleep study came back good, really good for my age.

As someone who has struggled with depression for over a decade now, it can definitely result in lack of energy and thus could be perceived as feeling tired. Plus, going to sleep/sleeping excessively is one of the "easiest" things to do when you're feeling down. It never helps because then you wake up mad that you wasted X amount of time sleeping but then you don't want to get up because it feels like nothing you do matters anyway... so you sleep more.

Just mentioning it as it's often overlooked by doctors that are mostly focused on physical issues.

Get him checked for Autoimmune issues and consider a real, comprehensive Lyme Disease test, not just one from "the doctor's office" that gets sent to LabCorp or Quest. You'll have to either research what lab/etc can send you a packet for a test or start talking to people, find out who has Lyme, who has had a comprehensive test and where/how they did it. This can get up to the $3-4k cost, just a warning.

Checking for autoimmune issues is a good idea. My middle child was having a lot of issues with energy and eventually some other symptoms pointed us in the direction of Lyme's. Turned out to be correct, he got treatment, and he's been good for years since it was addressed.

Dehydration definitely does this for me, but usually in the summer and usually afternoon.

I don't expect the suggestion of "drink more water" is going to cure him, but it's rarely a bad idea. Some suggest one ounce per pound of body weight per day.

Please look into how much "screen time" he is getting in on a daily / weekly basis. There are numerous articles saying that people with too much screen time are having issues getting into proper REM sleep.

Tough Sx to Dx.

Agree with most of the suggestions.
sleep study-check
vitamin deficiency-check
auto-immune issue-check
lyme disease, usually presents with an identifiable site, skin rash but that disease can mimic lots of problems.
situational/environmental ennui in an eighteen year old male-very possible. Can present with physical manifestations

I suffered from the same thing when I was about twenty. After my second day in boot camp, the Tx auto-corrected it.

I’ve been tired my entire life. Could be reflux, could be long Covid, could be autoimmune, could be parasites, could be heart rate related, let me know how it works out since they have never figured mine out besides inflammation.

Make sure he has adequate D as one of my friends developed epilepsy after being found with deadly low levels of D, he has a condition that he doesn’t easily absorb D and has to supplement.
