I had a stereo once that had this bright crackhead red/blue flash mode by default, whenever the battery was disconnected. Supposed to make it stand out in best buy or whatever. I could turn off the flashing via a deep submenu but it was still too bright, particularly this round porthole around the volume control.
So I pulled the faceplate off, masked it off, removed the volume knob, leaving the potentiometer head in place. Then I sprayed black paint over the translucent plastic. Let it dry, put the knob back on, and it was quite a bit better.
Most aftermarket stereos, at least the basic $89 CD headunits, seem marketed at the paper route and prom queen set.
