Hey all, just realizing after seeing 2010_FX4's post about his truck hitting 100K that in September mine will be 10 years old, so I figured I'd post a review too. I posted one last year before I had any problems with the truck, which can't be said now. While I still like the power, torque, and suprisingly good MPG that the Triton 4.6L can put out, a few problems have started springing up in the past year. First, the transmission blew 3rd and 4th gear at 142K, so I had a rebuilt one put in. Also recently, 2 ignition coils, throttle position sensor, and various other things that seem to add up. The truck now has 143.5K, and running like new again. Now don't get me wrong, I sill love this truck and would buy another without a thought. All older, high mileage vehicles will experience problems, but I think it was the transmission at under 150K that really bothered me. All in all, I really like the truck. It can tow, haul, go through snow (even when its only a 2WD, etc.) with no problems. I defiantly recommend them if your looking for a truck!

Out of curiosity, which transmission is this and how often was the filter and fluid changed?

It was the 4 speed auto and changed at around 100K

I THINK it uses the 4R70

IIRC, it would have the 4R70W.

The 4R100 was a more robust unit, but IIRC was only available behind the 5.4L and V10 gas engines. And the 4R70W is an excellent gearbox, they have a very low failure rate so this is somewhat surprising.

Yup thats the one. i was surprised too, I couldn't find many other failures online when I looked around.

Well your just plain lucky

I think I will do 50K changes on the transmission fluid, just to be safe

Perhaps I wasn't clear. You could GET the 4R100 behind the 5.4L if you had the towing package like I have on my Expedition. I don't believe you could get it behind the 4.6L.

What diff do you have? the 8.8" or the 9.75?

I have the 9.75", factory external trans and oil coolers, skid-plates and the factory Reese hitch. These (except the skid plates) were part of a "tow package" that was available on the F-150 as well, and IIRC, resulted in you getting the 4R100 transmission if you had the 5.4L.

I am not saying that was the cause of the failure, but I would not have waited until 100K to change it. I have changed mine twice now (complete fluid and filter replacement); once at 13,000 (to remove any break-in metals) and again at 71,000. I tow quite a bit and change mine every 50K or so--same goes for the transfer case and axles. Ford states that my rear axle had a lifetime fill; but my UOAs showed how much wear metal was in the initial change.
