I usually change my oil and let it drain until it is a slow drip.

Would there be any advantage to allowing it to drain for 1/2 to an hour? Would that much more dirty oil and crud really come out.

Slow drip, Babee!

Some let it drain overnight. If maybe an additional thimble full of oil will help you sleep better, then let'r'rip! Or drip...

i let my old stored oil that was diluted in fogging oil drip out for 30 mins with the engine being cold from the start.
But no there wont be a difference

O-Yes; leave the drain plug out overnight. That way if you have a home emergency you can walk. I let mine go to a drip-drip and put the plug in. Most engines retain ~ 1/4 quart anyway so what does an extra oz do- nothing.

It's probably not gonna make a huge difference but I always let it drain for a long time, until it's barely dripping anymore. Usually about 30 minutes. Just makes me feel better doing it.

If you're concerned about getting more oil drained, make sure it's really hot before you pull the plug

NO PAIN, NO GAIN!

Depends on the car.........some drain for quite some time after the plug is out. 1/4-1/2 qt the next hour....seems slow but it adds up.

I think the quickie places are terrible about it.

30 minutes should be fine. If a solvent flush, 2 hours minimum on a warm day.

I don't think there's too much of advantage of waiting longer than when it starts to slowly drip. You've already drained 99.8% of it (that would possibly drain out) to that point. The additional .2% isn't going to make a difference in the scheme of things...

Heres what my dad used to do.
He'd drain the oil and let it get to a slow drip.
Then he'd..........brace yourselves, start the car, let it run for 3 or so seconds, and shut it off.
You'd be surprised at how much extra old oil comes out.
I don't do this, nor support this. But it got out more oil and made him happier.
Never really seemed to do any damage to his vehicles either.

If you're a long OCI'r, that 1 hour drip drain definitely gives you peace of mind. I've been suprised at how much more comes out even after it's a slow drip - I've removed the collection pan and let it drip into something else at that pt - still forms a nice big puddle.

Probably wasn't any worse than starting it in very cold weather, considering the heavyweight oils and lack of synthetics in those days, eh?

I wait until it goes from a stream to a drip.

I also crank the dry engine with the old filter on first. It seems to clear the pump oil and the filter itself. I used to crank it after the filter was off, and it would spit out some oil, but with the filter on there is no mess from the pump oil and the filter is empty.

fwiw, it you look at the actual capacity specs for a rebuilt engine, it hold more than a quart inside. imo, a good reason not to over-extend ocis.

I have a good solution for totally cleaning the engine out. Use a jug of basic oil to flush it out (engine running for a few seconds) and save that oil for reuse. It can probally go 4-5 times and still come out clean then us eit in a mower or whatever.

The more you try to pump out the more time it takes to prime.

Takes longer for the oil pump to prime itself.

Ever since electric fuel pumps became the norm, I pull pump fuse

I always do this for priming oil after winter storage

I let the oil drain about an hour. until it drips slowly. and fill to full line. that's gotta be better than 95% of people on the road
