I'd like to only buy one grade of oil for my four vehicles, two take 5w-20 and two take 5w30. Our newest vehicle uses 5w30 Dexos oil (2014 Chevy Sonic), so would it be wise to switch to ST 5w30 Dexos synthetic for all of them?

Currently none of my vehicles except the Sonic run synthetic oil.

What's so hard about keeping both grades around? It's still going to be the same amount of oil to stock. If warranties are still in play, stick with the grade that's recommended. There are probably numerous threads on here on what others use for identical vehicles (ie see the oil change thread). Being in SoCal makes it a lot easier to run the thicker 5w30 grade. What are the cars?

I wonder if Ford back-spec'd the F250 to the 5w-20. They did the same on my 2002 Lincoln. I run the originally designed for 5w30 in it now....not the CAFE "recommended" 5w-20.
 
All vehicles except the Sonic are out of warranty.

2004 Ford F250 V10 - 5w-20
2002 Suzuki Aerio 2.0L - 5w30
2010 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS 2.4L - 5w-20
2014 Chevy Sonic 1.8L - 5w30
 
If you want to, then sure, it'll work fine. In general, going up or down one grade won't cause any issues, and going up one is the safer of the two.
 
While Mitsubishi recommends the 5w-20 to meet CAFE and cold starting requirements, for temperate weather like SoCal 5w/10w-30 should be ok.
 
Should be fine. dexos1 is a pretty stout specification.

What engine in the Sonic? 1.8 or 1.4T? The 1.8 is easy on oil, while the 1.4T is quite hard on oil.

Personally I stock both for my vehicles, but if I had to pick one I would just run the 5w30 that meets the specs for the Sonic and call it a day. There really isn't THAT much difference between the two oils.
 
What about 0w-30? I think the Mobil website recommended Mobil 1 0w-20 and 0w30 if you're running 0w-20 and 5w-20. I'm guessing 0w30 would probably work for 5w30 also.

The goal is to stock only one oil in my garage. I'm using Dexos because my daughter's Sonic calls out for it.

Looks like ST 5w30 Dexos synthetic it is then, thanks for the input.

I never found a 0w30 on the "approved" dexos1 list, but that in no way means there isn't a bunch of 0w30 oils that easily meet or go beyond the dexos1 standard.

"General Motors Service Fill dexos1™ (license number GB1C1008015)"

The Mobil1 0w30 I have says Dexos1 on it.

Without question you can run 5w30 oil in all your vehicles, in fact you will be doing them a favor.
