All else being equal, why not Top Tier

If you had two stations next to each other, same price, one Top Tier, the other not, why would you not get the Top Tier?

Seems like a silly question.

I'd say that if the non-top tier station had a lower ethanol content, Id get their gas. I can easily add cleaning and lubricity adds, I cannot easily remove large quantities of ethanol.

Top Tier is a detergent gasoline standard of some sort that has a list of approved stations distributing the right type of gas. Google Top Tier gas stations. I'm not convinced it really means anything.

Top Tier branding hasn't made it any easier to buy the best fuel. Some top tier stations like Shell get quite a few complaints. BP sells good fuel and is endorsed by Ford but doesn't want to participate in Top Tier.

Before Top Tier, buy wherever you want to. After Top Tier... same. I don't see the Top Tier program as a success.

It's all hype. I used to buy my gas from Shell. I did an intake gasket replacement and the inside of the engine was nasty. I switched to Costco (cheaper too).

After seeing a tanker pull into a Shell station drop fuel and go a mile or two down the road to another station with no name and drop fuel, I'm pretty sure top tier is hit or miss at best. I've also seen trucks with no name on the side drop fuel at BP and Sunoco as well.

This is a no-brainer---you go with Top Tier all of the way. However, I will state that most of the Shells in my area are usually 10 cents more per gallon. Needless to say that they dont get any of my business. Luckily I have Quiktrip and for my Lexus I have Phillips 66 from whom I buy ethanol free premium for just 5 cents more than the ethanol stuff at Quicktrip! Unfortunately only their premium is ethanol free otherwise my van would be frequenting there.

Well, I could go to Shell, Turkey Hill, or my choice of BPs.

The first two are TT. TH is the cheapest. BP is the closest.

I know that BMW is part of TT, but I think they also recommend BP.

Shell, last I looked was the most expensive 3.17/2.99/3.09 for the premium. Shell/TH/BP.

Both Shell and BP have 93. TH has 92.

But it seems that many times, pumps at the BP are down. (One time shut down by the state.)

Ethanol-free gas whenever possible. Better fuel mileage that way, so if the difference is a dollar or two a tank, it's saving me some money.

I've always found that "all else being equal" rarely is!

Eh, it's more fun to wash the car myself. And I wouldn't trust an automated carwash that uses brushes, since the guy who went mudding just drove his truck through it, leaving my car with his rocks.

If there are no other options, I'd get a Top Tier gas over a cut-rate gas station.
