Hello, I recently discovered that a friend of mine from a long ways back is suffering from Agoraphobia. If I understand it right, this means a fear of leaving the house? I just got back into contact with this person, call it a high school friend, and I am wondering if anyone has any tips.. I do not fully understand the illness, so I am unsure what general things Agoraphobes are/arent comfortable with. Thank you

Kind of. Agoraphobics become anxious in environments that are unfamiliar with or where they have little-no control. At the extreme end, they may not leave their home, but as with everything, it has different shades.

Agoraphobia translates literally as "fear of the open marketplace", and Colt's description above is right on. My sister has a mild case and while she will go places as necessary, she prefers to stay at home or work in her yard.

I've lived in my current house for 24 years and even though it's less than an hour's drive, she been here exactly once.

I'm suffering from "Aworkaphobia". Symptoms include the inability to concentrate and pay attention. Some relief can be obtained from brief stints on BITOG and weekends but the only known cure is full retirement.

Is your friend into alcohol or drugs?

I've been in AA for decades and most newcomers (myself included in 1989) had come to a place where they are only comfortable (safe) at home.

I wish your friend the best.

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder and can be treated with
SSRIs like Prozac. A high dose of 80mg a day should do it.
