WOW! that is just....nutty...

about a year ago, I stumbled across a '88 Camry wagon, 5 speed, on Ebay with around 35K on the clock. For the last 10 years, the only miles were for emissions testing. Yes, I was going to bid on it. It was sitting in a garage in Oregon for pretty much its whole life. It wasn't this ridiculous, but it was close! Writing still on the undercarriage, etc. I was under the impression that I had to be the only person always on the prowl for 5 speed Camry wagons. I was obviously wrong--the bidding went to over 5K, then the guy ended the auction, when I can only imagine some crazy person make him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Sooo...when does this dude plan to start driving this car?

Kind of neat but kind of weird. I like to see like new older cars, but this one is almost too like new...

how much is it worth? $500?

the seals got to be dry rotted in that thing. what a waste.

You could probably add a minimum of 2 zero's to that.

Maybe one zero and multiply that by 2. When as new MB diesels from the early 1980s come up for sale, their values generally go as high as their original sticker price (figure 35k in 1982 dollars), but in todays currency.

This one is especially original. What was it new? 10k? I'd imGine it selling for 12k or so.

8 years ago, I attended a Rally school, and the beginners car was one of those with an import motor (next step was a Celica GT-4).

I liked it, and found that street versions were outside my price range.

Once the drifters discovered them, $7k for one that can't get out of it's own way is about right.

I owned a GTS. To this day, it is the most neutral handling car I've ever driven. You could throw it into corners, flatten the throttle and get a nicely controlled four wheel drift every time. I was also a motorcycle enthusiast in the day but a car that would willingly rev to 7500 rpm all day every day was quite a relevation for the time. The key to the car's character was RWD.

I bought a 'Time Capsule' 84 Toyota Pick up, that had been stored 23 years. It has now been a daily driver for the last 4 years, there has been no problems with Dry or Rotted seals, in fact, no problems at all!
If I wanted another car, I would pay a 'good price' for that Corolla.

Every once in a while this same 2003 Corvette 50th anniversary edition shows up in the Auto Trader, it's only got 200 km on it, the guy claims he drove it straight from the dealer into heated storage and never drove it since. But this car hasn't sold in over 2 years now. He originally was asking $65,000 for it, which was approximately the original price for the car, but when the car showed up again a few weeks ago it was down to $35,000. So it makes me wonder what the heck the guy was thinking when he bought it? Did he honestly think it was going to be a good investment? The anniversary edition was not limited by any means, in fact they produced more anniversary editions in 2003 than any other Corvette! (something like 5000 were made)

In the case of this Corolla, at least the guy is not selling it, his intention was probably to preserve a car he thought was really cool and wanted others in the future to see. As much as I like to drive my cars, I can respect someone who wants to preserve a car by never driving it (as long as he's got something else cool to drive and isn't cheating himself the opportunity to have fun!) I suspect if I ever won the lottery I might just buy one car that I would never drive. Perhaps a rare Lamborghini or Ferrari, although I'd buy two of them, one to drive and one to rub with a diaper! (like Cameron Fry's dad)
