Advice on used Volvo purchase

Kid was disappointed he did not get a car on his one day off. I now scored one that looks like a go. 1998 V70 (non-turbo) 80k red, no sunroof, exceptionally clean. It's close by at a tidy VW dealership, so it's been tweaked and I'm sure anything needed was addressed rather than the lots that just click off the cel and wax it. He'll have a PA sticker and tag w/ this one. VW dealer probally offers a better basic warranty than usual used car lots. They kept it rather than wholesale because it was so clean...agree???

I got them down from $8900 to $8200 on the phone. Price is average/good for a 10k miles a year car. Deal is set for sat.
No turbo is a plus, look at the engine pic...the turbo cars we saw all had 10x the broiled oil crud on the v/c. I could barely get the filler cap off one car it was so gooey.

Good grief! N. Penn imports. We have a car in there right now. If I get a chance I'll take a look at it this evening when we pick up.

But if you're willing to come down to Hatfield, drive an extra 25 minutes and see what Levitt has. I would take his Volvos over a dealer trade in a minute. His are all serviced pre-sale by Keystone in Berwyn, the very best Volvo dealer service department in this region (trust me on that one). Levitt will also undersell a roadside dealer by a good bit, and he also gives warranties. You'll get a better car for less money.

When was the timing belt done? If they can't document that it was positively done at 70k, factor in another $400 for one NOW. A good owner will have it listed in his service book. If they don't even have the service book in the glove box, that's a big red flag right there.

The base 850 engines don't get that soiled, unless severely abused.

I'd check over at VW vortex before you anoint them service gods. Ours is only in for inspection.

My wife drives a Volvo 2003 XC 90. It has about 90,000 miles on the odometer. SUVs are not really my style, but I must admit that this is probably the most reliable, trouble free car I've ever had in my garage. I'm very impressed with it.

I was using Castrol 0w-30 in it. Now I'm having trouble finding it. There's Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in it, now.

We have two greyhounds. That and furniture is about all it ever moves around, but it does it just fine.

Well, we went to the Piazza in Reading. It was a pita....and the staff really did not seem to have a good attitude. The car was actually a mess, parked in the back....a good while wasted until we could even see it, presented by our substitute salesman who prefered to blow smoke up my butt than talk about the car....every dash light was on, SRS and CEL. The body was fair and the engine bay poor-fair and bald tires. I said see ya and walked out w/o another word.

Mapquest says 1h40m driving time to the NorthPenn VW dealer to see the red car. I did it in 1h5m. Got there at 3:30 on sat, they close at 5.

The car was flawless. Staff was friendly but not overly so. The car was really flawless.

I smar tass asked if it gets a full tank of gas, salesman said it had 3/4...I retorted "so, less for you to have to pump in". Original price was $8900, I was quoted $8300 via phone but said to the salesman...so, $7900? They guy started to tell me about the 3rd row seat...."I don't care about that". lol, I worked him good.

He knew we were buying and got down to biz. Nephew only had a letter approving him for a credit union loan and the banks the dealer uses were closed. Problem is not the the kid is impatent, but he works 12hr days at Red Cross...no time to come back and needs a car monday for work. After dealership offering to deliver the car to him (far away) monday which was nice, but not do-able because of the particulars of his job, they actually hooked him up by taking a personal check for the full amount, check number 001. I actually had to help the kid fill it out. They said get the financing done mon-tues and it's "all good".

Can you believe that a major business took a crumpled check from a teenager for a major transaction? We are both ernest people, but [censored]! Not only that, they charged him $8000 even. When the salesman announced he was shooting out to Wawa to top off the gas tank, I half-seriously asked him to shag me a coffee...and he did! We shook the guy who did the paper work's hand at exactly 5pm, tag on the car, full tank of gas, coffee and a really happy kid. I added a bottle of MLEP to the fresh dealer oil. Now the fun begins.
