What is a good air filter for a 2010 GMC Savana 5.3L V8 that is in a desert state NV and will be driving OFTEN on off roads in dusty dirty wash boards roads and sandy lake shore beaches, and some roads with 3-4" of fine dirt?

Also are there any good reusable AF's up to the job?

Reusable? Maybe look at AFE Power website. I use a ProDry S myself and it seems pretty good. I don't drive in dust a lot though.

I have been to their site. I was on the phone with their sales rep trying to find out if they made a filter for my vehicle(which they do)

I am trying to find out if these filters provide maximum filtration equal to or greater than an OEM paper filter or an aftermarket paper filter, ac delco etc.

If you are driving in those conditions, a reusable filter is not the best.

That is what I am thinking but I thought I'd see if there is anything out there that might be good that I didn't kmow about.

Are they all the same?

Similar, I'd say Purolator and Wix are neck/neck. Though I haven't used AC Delco before(not a bad brand), it isn't a bad choice either. Sometimes, it's best(IMO) to just open the boxes they are in at the store to just give it the good old eye test. Compare the quality and see what you like. Raise the filter toward the lights in the store as well.

I use K&N myself, but I don't live in a dusty area. There may be a re-usable you can get away with using out there, but with what you describe it's hard to match OEM filtration with a higher flow air filter, which is what most of your 're-usable' air filters are designed/marketed for.

I've 'heard' about Amsoil's air filters, but I don't know if they actually filter as well as their marketing for them say they do. Ask the amsoil dealers that post here if you want.

IMO, you can't go wrong with any that have been discussed except K&N(again because of where you live). Just find out which stores in your area carry which brand, then jot down the part numbers for each brand, and finally look at them each in person. See what you think is the most durable looking, having even pleats and no dried glue etc. Examine the outer rubber gasket around the element for any damage/poor sealing(if you see light between the rubber and the filter element) that way no particles can squeeze around any part of your filter. You want the filter to fit snug in the air box, too. Some aftermarket parts don't 'quite' reach the exact OEM measured spec.

Unfortunately, because of the nature of the 'application' rule you have to find out which parts are the best quality/brand in each case.

thanks for the info slimjim

I have not looked at any air filters yet as my 2010 is still new enough that the one that came with the vehicle should be ok. But the type of offroad driving which I do constantly is going to require me to change the AF a little more often.

I read that AF test report that showed that the Ac Delco gave the best filtration out of all the filters tested. SO I was leaning in that direction.
Here's the Spicer test.

There is so little complete data on air filters out there, I don't have an answer for you.

When I poured a measured amount of dust through my AFE ProDryS into the airflow, it kept the downstream cloth as clean as anything I tried...however you are not supposed to oil the ProDry S, and I had it oiled. I run it oiled. Crude, but that's all I know.

My 5.7 liter 1996 Chevy Express 1500 says in the Owner's Manual (and on the air filter cover) to use a different air filter for dusty conditions. It is a diesel air filter.

Check your Owner's Manual and Air Filter Cover.
