I had to change the worn out valve seals in my 87 305 Chevy engine with almost 200k miles on it (was running hot until I changed the rad, so the heat probably cooked the valve seals prematurely). Anyways when I pulled the valve covers off it looked like brand new underneath. I changed the oil every 3k miles and had switched to synthetic some time after I had it for a while.
I've seen a few other engines that were spotless under the valve covers with somewhat regular oil changes.
Now I would have no problem with trying auto rx for an engine that had been neglected before I got it, or had oil consumption issues but not in one that I know was taken care of.
Do a search on dnewton3's user name in this forum. Spotless 3.0 Vulcan ..with two low cylinders on compression. It was the location of a freeze plug failure and an overheat (between the cylinders).
Ring coking can occur regardless of visible deposit formation. While I won't do an Auto-Rx treatment every 25k, like Rich20, the maintenance dose is something I would probably do if I was someone who wanted to assure in its prevention. I do too many experiments where I need to isolate the oil being tested for longevity (or whatever). On the extended fleet (kids and their SO's) I have a couple that I add it to the sump at the maintenance dose rate (already treated).
I did my first Auto-rx treatment on both jeeps just recently. They have 147k and 75k on them.
