I know most stores are not carrying them anymore, but does anyone know if there are any online vendors that are selling them? I find it strange that at least at my local AAP, they did not offer a clearance or sale on the filters.

I don't know if it's the same for your location but they told me they were just putting them behind the counter and are still selling them (mostly to commercial accounts), so try asking your locations to see if they can sell you any still. I don't know if they plan on replenishing their stock though.

I spoke with the salesperson at two different AAP who told me the same thing. Both said I could ask for them but they are not on the shelves.

Having the AAP filter on the shelf only hurt their filter sales.

If you want the slip resistant coating, but don't want to spend the $$ on a PureOne, they sell a 'sand paper' type spray paint.

How did having a house brand filter at a pretty good price hurt thier filter sales?

Well, the Fram brand is much more prominant at AA than it ever was. At an Orange Virginia AA a couple of weeks ago, they sold me the red Purolator-built AA filters for my car for 1.88 each. They were behind the counter, but they had plenty of them (for my car, anyway) until I got there. I bought them out, a dozen of them. They'll do.

Here's my speculation. Purolator makes the AATG. When AA had their bogo sale ..all Purolator sales sank. It was probably also true that there seemed to be a preference for the grippy stuff. Since Purolator was building the filter anyway, and was cutting their own throat in the process, they negotiated with AA to take the AATG off the shelf. Then the greedy basturds upped the ante figuring that people would up to the PureOne with the grippy stuff if the only alternative was an equally (or more) expensive Fram.

Dayum, Gary, you're a cynical bastage...

That definitely sounds feasible to me. Makes sense.

Surprised AA/Purolator didn't try to up the price of the AATG...a sort of "supply and demand".

The decision to rid the AAPTGs off the sales floor was for two purposes:

1) We wanted more brand presence with our commericial accounts. We were previously selling them Powerflow filters at even cheaper price than the AAPTGs. Some quick lube shops in some regions were not even buying the Powerflows and instead buying the AAPTGs at regular retail due to its grip texture. So we got rid of the Powerflow oil filters and replaced them with the AAPTGs.

2) As mentioned, the AAPTGs were not profitable to continue selling to retail customers. The Purolator PremiumPlus price point was on average only $0.50 more than the AAPTG, so it was not seen as a problem to the customers who "want the cheapest thing".

3) Us managers hated them. As mentioned, the BOGO sales we would have on them, absolutely murdered us in rank & rates on premium filter sales.

As for why some stores did not have a clearance sale on AAPTGs o refused to sell. It depends if the AAP you went to was a commericial delivery store, if it has the ugly yellow Chevy Colorados parked out front, it is one. These stores were issued a directive to pull them off the shelf immediately to stock their commericial counter. Non-delivery stores had a clearance sale on them for $1.95 and after one week a callback directive was issued for any remaining stock to be sent back to the servicing DC.

Now a hard core BITOG type would go in there and grab at least two of each size that fitted his cars ..but it always was a loss leader. Has corporate figured a new sacrificial lamb to bring in the public in droves??

Do you know if they'll still be selling them to retail customers if they ask for them, and if so, will they be restocked, or just discontinued once all remaining stock is sold out?

No, the time was right, with Purolator unveiling the "gold can" PureOnes with the same texture grip spray they used on the AAPTGs. They thought those who loved the texture grip of the AAPTGs would pay the extra $2.00 for the PureOne over the PremiumPlus.

It is highly unlikely you will see an Advance branded oil or air filter any time soon. It's removal from the sales floor also allowed us to bring in new part numbers and change the number of facings on the most popular oil filter part numbers (L10241, L120195, L30001, PH2, PH5, PH16 etc) which allowed us to raise our maximum on-hands quantity without generating backstock.

With the non-commericial delivery stores, our favorite phrase, "When its gone, its gone". With the commericial delivery stores, they will still have them behind the counter, but they are only meant to be sold to our shop accounts. If that particular store doesn't have a real successful oil filter stocking program anywhere or at all, they may be willing to sell them to you. I think the price dropped from the original retail price too, not entirely sure as my store is non-delivery.

HOWEVER, for stores, like mine, that are non-delivery, if you become real good friends with one of the managers, they can probably add order some in for you, but it will take one to two weeks (Depending on the DC truck rotation, as well as timing of the order being placed).

The AAP website still permits online ordering with same day in store pickup at my local AAP (zipcode). It must be one of those commercial delivery stores.

How odd, a design flaw in the software, because it shows pickup available on Powerflows as well, which have never been sold on retail. It also shows the evaporator core I ordered myself available for pickup only at my store and it's paid for!

If I were you, I would exploit this

but still when we get the pop-up for an internet order being placed, we can cancel it and have the credit card refunded, so it again boils down to knowing the managers and them knowing you.
