so I have been looking at running 5w20 in my 2.4 hyundai, but it doesn't say to use it in the owners manual unless really cold, but the year after mine states 5w20 all temps. so i did some research and the engines are identical. I do a lot of short trip driving so i think that i will benefit from the oil being thin during the winter months . let me know what you all think

You don't have winter months. A 10w30 would be fine in your location.

What year is your Hyundai? Still have warranty concerns? (10 years / 100k power train)

5w-20 would be fine. So would 5w30 or 10w30....

Take care, Bill

Bill makes a valid point. Why risk not getting coverage on a warranty engine problem over an oil that isn't specified. As long as there is a warranty involved stay with what is specified.

I wonder if there may be a service bulletin saying 5W20 is OK for earlier vehicles. It is worth checking.

no, no warranty just wanted to give it a shot since it will be cooling down i mean it doesn't get to -10 or anything but it will get to about 22-28*F in the morning and i usually don't have far to go so i just wanted to experiment.

22-28f is nothing. A warm morning. (We had frost last night. Its only Sept 1st/2nd).

A 5w30 or 5w-20 is going to be the same at those temps.

How many miles on the engine? What is a short trip?

Take care, Bill

99340 miles i just wanted to give 5w20 a try. a short trip can be 4 miles to the store and back but the most i drive one way in a day is 40miles
