A new meaning to "urethane topcoat"...

It was just a matter of a few moments. One of "What the...?", as I pulled into the left lane to pass a slower car. Followed by "Why is this stuff...?", as I swooped by the other guy. With a sudden "HOLY SH..!!!", as I dove for another lane. It couldn't have been more than a few seconds from noticing what I thought was another typical landscaper's special to realizing, horrifically, that it was anything but.

At least the vehicles were moving so you can file a claim there. I had a junk 4x8 plywood full of nails fly out of a pickup bed in a home depot parking lot and hit my mother in law's car. Neither vehicle was moving, truck driver said call the cops. Cops refused to come, calling it an act of God.

Incidentally in some states some stuff is legal to fall off a truck... like chicken feathers. Gravel, if it falls and bounces once off the road, often is no longer the liability of the truck hauling it.

I'm sorry to hear about that. It sounds much worse than the bucket of fresh paint that fell out of a pickup the other day that I had the pleasure of removing from the right side of our car.

Great quote material. Mind if I use it if it fits?

Don't confuse the quote with "it's legal to have stuff falling off of your truck". I can't imagine any state NOT having some variation of "illegal seeping or shifting of load" or "failure to secure load". Otherwise, fly ash haulers and sewerage pumpers would never have a landfill or treatment plant expense.

Don't forget the rental car costs in your projected losses.

Somehow I don't think blasting Dean Martin tunes from a boat will fix this.

Something to include if it has to be done the hard way is "permanent depreciation" if you have to repaint it.

Non-original paint is considered a negative. So if they make it hard, then make them pay you extra for having to live with a non-factory paint job. (I've seen similar things obtained on damage to rental houses)

Well, here is the latest.

All the grills (which constitute most of the front end) are going to have to be replaced, since they have no hope of getting the stuff off of their unfinished textured surfaces. The front bumper is also going to be removed in order to be able to clean out the radiator, inter-cooler and condenser fins. They're reserving judgment on the paint until they see if they have any luck removing the goo. The turn-signal lenses on the mirrors may well have to be replaced, too.

The kicker is that this stuff has a tendency to etch glass, and it's done just that. So the GTI is going to be getting a new windscreen to boot. I forgot to mention them to the shop, but the HID headlamps (as well as the fogs) have glass housings so they need to be checked for etching as well. You don't want to know what a set of HIDs go for...

All the replacement parts are going to be OE Volkswagen. At this point, with just the grills, the windscreen and a detail job, it's easily into four figures. If it needs any other trim or a set of lenses, much less paint or a set of fogs or headlamps, we're talking some really serious money.

The fun has just barely begun.

I was thinking about the definition of fall of the truck (you know, you got a great deal on used stuff because the seller said they "fell off the truck").

The apple doesn't fall far from the horse.

There's surely salvaged loads and damaged loads. There's an outfit locally called DRS. Damage Recovery Systems. They seem to deal with food stuffs. In that case it would be something like a trailer turning over (extreme case) and the whole load being written off due to dented cans and whatnot. They're liquidators.

Volkswagen may not approve, but here's what I'd do: since all that stuff looks like an icky creature cocoon or spider web special effect, mount a giant rubber spider or some other ghastly bug on the roof. Change your name and stencil "Roach Hunter For Hire" on your car. A new career is born!

Memo to operations: Advise CrownVic Man and the (?)th Street Sniper that mori will change careers if they spray down his car with urethane material in a manner that results in a spider web like finish.

Actually, mori would then become a hitman.
