To be sold in the USA, a Chinese Buick. I wonder if it comes with it's own build sheet showing the chemical sewage behind the factory or the 14 hour workers.

It'll be funny to see the recalls for ... oh, small things... like the gas tank being lied about and made from an inferior plastic than originally specified. Corner cutting on welds... etc.

That may just be a racist attitude at work. Remember, pretty much all iphones come from China along with many other items. It's really up to the manufacturer to control the supply chain and to maintain QC. There's no real story here.

Volvo is now a Chinese company. They're still making cars in Sweden but I understand they're also building them in a Chinese plant for the Asian market. After a couple of years I wouldn't be surprised if they close the plant in Sweden if they're able to make quality cars in China and avoid paying for all the crazy personnel costs in Sweden.

You sound jaded. Care to elaborate?

Well, people are usually happy if their iPhones last for a couple of years. Not so much with a car.
A few years ago, a guy who had just moved from China told me it was not unusual to buy a locally branded cell phone there and have it last two weeks. This was not totally unexpected and it would just be tossed and you'd buy another one. I think that quality is becoming much more important over there, but I would expect there will be some teething pains with Buick.

It makes sense with a low volume non-important to US GM brand like Buick to test the waters.

Buick exists in US because Buick China is highly regarded brand. Otherwise it would have gone the way of Saturn, Hummer, Pontiac and Oldsmobile......

Yes, this is old news.

However, I can't wait to see how many duds come out of a GM plant in China, versus a GM plant (controlled by the UAW) in North America.

What does "race" have to do with low quality of goods? Your mind works in odd ways.

You really think China has a good reputation for quality in general? Wow. Well, I guess we can't criticize them due to race issues. PC gone mad.

I was going to point out that the GM plants overseas contribute to this:

I guess that makes me a rascist!

iPhone is made in China. Most people love them. Apple as a company is doing great.

Well said!

And as long as we are being racist...

Why is it that.....

the Germans over engineer their products (many times in a counterproductive manner ie. 6 foot long timing chains)

Chinese under engineer theirs.

British just make theirs upsides down and inside out.

Does anybody really do "stout" engineering yet balanced engineering? Maybe they did and put themselves out of business?

Let's look up the definition of racists:

1. A belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

So the automatic assumption that because it's made in China and will automatically be of inferior quality could be considered racists.

On the other hand, if you don't automatically assume it will be inferior but are willing to wait to see what happens, then maybe you're not racist.

Nope, pretty sure you or a family member has been burned from a former union/auto company, but thats just me making baseless assumptions like your original post.

They CAN, but do they? With good quality control feedback and proper specs, its usually possibly to get Chinese companies to make great stuff.

As for making things overly complicated, I think GM has shown the greatest ability to provide elegant solutions. For example, compare the upcoming V8 Camaro (2016) with the almost-same-sized BMW M4. Due to use of the elegant (non-turbo, compact) V8 in lieu of the M4's twin turbo I6 complex nightmare, performance is about the same in both cars, but thats another thread.

We assume they might put out shoddy quality because of past performance.
Your attempt to inject race into this discussion fails yet again.
