Hello everyone. I have been on the forums for a while but finally registered so I can post. I just needed some advice. I purchased a 1999 Chevrolet tahoe in February. When I got it the truck had 168,000 miles. I was not sure of previous maintenance done on the truck.it does not leak any oil at all. All I got was a carfax telling me there was no accidents and that my truck was from Alaska. I live in El Paso tx where we might drop into the high teens 1 time per year the rest is usually 25-30 degrees. From February up to 1 month ago I ran PP 10-30 with purolator classics. I was changing the oil about once a month. There was some sludge but it's really clean now under the valve cover. I'm having some cash issues and las drain oil was pretty clean. I just bought a jug of supertech 10-30 and a purolator classic for this next oil change I was just wondering now that my engine is clean how long I can run this oil.

I have a 98 Suburban and I have tried all sort of different oils and filters. Anyway, not that I have used your combo, but I personally would not worry running that oil out to 5k-6k miles without patting an eyelash. That is my opinion on your question. You have the old Chevy 350 in there and those things last a lifetime for the most part and can run on anything.

Ok. Will try my hardest to go at least 5k. The only thing that worries me is that it's drinking coolant about a quart a month. And once the engine is warm I hear a donk.....donk....donk... Noise not sure what it could be though.

There should be a rudimentary oil life monitor on that vehicle, and I'd suggest you could follow that fairly safely. Read the manual to confirm how to reset it. It should be key on/engine off and pump the gas pedal three times to the floor really fast.

I'm not sure it has one. Although it did not come with a manual. It's the old body style truck, if that helps.

Watch the coolant then, keep an eye on the oil and make sure you didn't push a head gasket and it is taking fluid into the engine. Not sure what you are talking about with the noises when warm, I get the opposite with the cold start piston slap that calms as soon as some temp builds up in the motor.

Chevrolet Tahoes will run forever if maintained. They are tanks on four wheels... Just make sure you do reg SYN OCI's with a good filter and change out the SYN ATF every 30K-50K miles. The Coolant should be drained and refilled every 2 years/30K miles. If its a 4X4, change out that fluid and rear diff every 50K.

Many people never do the ATF for the first time until after 100K miles, if ever and thats not a good thing. Good luck with it.

It is a 4x4x2 lol someone stole my front driveshaft/prop shaft a week after I bought it. Coolant was replaced about 2 months ago when I replaced the radiator because of a leak. Transmission fluid is really bright red, I am just scared to do a drain and fill because of all the horror stories I have heard of transmissions messing up after. The rear diff is leaking about a pea size drop a day. Hopefully today I will have some cash left for a new gasket and some gear oil.

I thought it would have one. 1996 Caprices had them. In any event, it's easy to check to see if there is one without the manual. Turn the key on and do the pedal dance. If something about oil changes flashes on the instrument panel, it means you got one and it's working.

For the 1999 model year, I was mostly stuck with a fistful of Ford trucks and SUVs, so I'm not sure what the deal really is.
