Hi guys,

Picked up a 89 accord lx-i, with 85k miles. Wondering what oil would be best considering my driving style/change interval etc:

I never use full throttle, shift before 2.5k rpm. I'm planning on sticking to honda's 'regular service' oil change intervals which are 7,500. Honda recommends 10w40 for my climate.

The car will be doing 35k+ miles a year, mostly highway.

I'd like to run a 10w40 non-synth because the oil pan gasket is going bad, and synth tends to make older seals on these cars leak more; possibly a 5w40?

Any recommendations/suggestions?

Thank you!

if you shift at 2500rpm, I imagine you're going for fuel economy. If your engine doesnt burn oil there, try a 5w20 (i'm serious) or no thicker than 10w30. If the engine has been better days why not high mileage 5w30. just fix that oil pan gasket

Yeah, I'd say no more than an HM 10W30, although I don't think you'd be bad off with a 10W40. You could also try Auto-RX to clean things up and then go synth???? But pan gasket isn't going to set you back that much and unless you have to remove the subframe or something, it's pretty easy to do.

I could be wrong but I think to replace the oil pan gasket on most Hondas, you have to remove the exhaust system to get to it. I know that's how it is on my car but other Hondas might be different. The gasket itself isn't expensive though, once you get the exhaust out of the way it's a really easy fix.

Oh, exhaust would be a good time for all.
